On the self-reported course work part of the application, where it says "if there is anything we should know about your school's grading system, please use this space below or attach another sheet", is it okay to mention information about particular classes (e.g. ones that are required, prerequisites) in this section even though its not really about the grading system?

My son mentioned in that section that his school's transcript designated post-AP classes with a code 'O' (compared with A for AP, H for Honors, and no designator for other classes), which was related to his class/grade list above but was not specifically about the "grading system". He did not mention anything about his required or prerequisite courses. I imagine most students who take advanced coursework have to take prerequisites, and almost everyone has required courses, is there a reason you need to call these out specifically? If you need to make something clear about particular classes, you may want to include that in the "Is there anything else we need to know?" section.

Yeah, they're not prerequisites but rather they are non-advanced courses that are required to be taken after certain advanced classes (weird I know); I just dont want it to seem that I took easy classes on purpose.

My school does not offer AP Chem because it doesn't like the curriculum, but we do have Advanced Chem, which I'm taking, which gives the opportunity to take the AP Chem test. I listed Advanced Chem in my coursework, but AP Chem under AP tests taken or to be taken, which I think implies taking AP Chem. Would this section be an appropriate place to explain that?

any other thoughts?

Sure it's okay...but memory fails me, this isn't on the guidance counselor sheet, is it? There's a place for your guidance counselor to describe your school's academic program, where he/she will most definitely mention things like required classes.
