I know that in the US during your first two years of undergraduate studies you mostly take General Education classes. However that is very different from universities in Germany, where you start with your major right away. With graduating from High School you end all of the general education. So I would like to know how many courses and which ones you have to take in college, and how many GE credits you will need in general for graduation before starting with your major. Also do some of you international students expect to receive credit for your High School work for college? Since in Germany you go to school for 13 years I think I might be able to do so. I am not sure though....

Foreigngirl -- There is no single answer to this question, because each university has different requirements and different policies for granting credit. At the two extremes, Brown has no GE requirements. Columbia and the University of Chicago have a lot of them in the form of a core curriculum, which is very specific and might, indeed, be somewhat repetitive for someone with a European education. Most fall somewhere in between. You really need to choose some universities to look at, then go to their websites and look up their requirements and policies on granting credit for courses taken in high school.
