I posted this in the International Student section but just decided this might fit in better here. Any responds will be greatly appreciated!

I know that in the US during your first two years of undergraduate studies you mostly take General Education classes. However that is very different from universities in Germany, where you start with your major right away. With graduating from High School you end all of the general education. So I would like to know how many courses and which ones you have to take in college, and how many GE credits you will need in general for graduation before starting with your major. Also do some of you international students expect to receive credit for your High School work for college? Since in Germany you go to school for 13 years I think I might be able to do so. I am not sure though....

ALL SCHOOLS IN THE US ARE DIFFERENT FOR GE REQUIRMENT. AND OFTEN INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS WITH IN A UNIVERISTY DIFFER ON GE REQUIRMENTs. Also very few schools do you mostly take GE classes your first 2 years. For me I had to do 30 Quarter GE units for my first 2 years. Rest of my classes where for my major. The idea that you have 2 whole years to pick any major in the U.S is a myth. While you can change majors with out to much trouble, you still waist time if you don't pick right away, since GE classes make up only fraction of your first two years. Like if you decided to do History when you when you start college, if you decide to change to math 2 years later in nearly any University you will find you self WAY WAY behind. Extreamly difficult if not impossible to graduate on time, since the two majors are so different.

foreigngirl- I know you're looking at USC. There are 7 categories of GEs here that a person needs to take, plus two writing classes, one of which you take freshman year, and one junior. If you look up on the website, you can see what categories they are. Also, at USC you definitely start your major classes right away, unless you are undecided.

Depending on major, but pretty much all universities require between 36-40 Gen Ed classes. Usually 6 hours of English, 9 Social Sciences, 6-9 Humanities, 6 Hard Sciences, and 3 Math or Foreign Language.

WOW I know that can't be true since 36-40 would be between 108-160 semester or Quarter units WAY to many. More like 36-40 Units worth not classes worth.

thanks guys for your help. Yes uschicka your right, I'm looking at USC, also some of the UC's, NYU and some other schools... Do you know if there is a way to get credit for "already done courses" in High School? I never had any AP or IB classes, since we dont have that, but is there a possibilty to get credit for my High School general education courses? I cant seem to find anything on that on the schools' websites!

I am really interested in double majoring in Business and something else. I haven't decided on my "second major" yet. I really like languages, but also am interested in Psychology.

oh yes and I am also interested in Music, like majoring in Music Industry or something like that. And also journalism. There's many things I am interested in but can't figure out what is really "my thing"....

Since you haven't taken any AP courses, I don't see how any classes can be waived, unless you took courses at another college, community college or otherwise. But maybe since you are an international student there are rules and exceptions that I don't know about.

you can get credit for IB courses, if you took those.

My school has:
2 writing requirements, fullfilled through normal classes designated as "writing intensive"
must computing proficiency
1 course in Math
2 sciences (1 physical, 1 biological, 1 of them has to have a lab)
3 social sciences
3 world cultures and history
1 literature and history of the arts
2 CREDITS in the same creative or performing art
1 philosophical, religious, or social thought

my school also prides itself in providing a "liberal arts education". Not all colleges have gen ed requirements.

Hi, I'm from Germany as well, btw.
So far, I've found out that the only school that mentions any credit given to international students on their homepage is Pepperdine, where one gets up to 30 semester hour credits for the Abitur:

Hey Inco! Wow that sounds great...does courses with a "minimum grade of 7" mean Punktzahl 7 in dem Fach? Where are you applying to and wo kommst Du her?

I've still got over a year to make up my mind where I'm actually applying, so nothing in particular yet.

I don't know what they exactly mean by "minimum grade of 7" but I guess it's either your Abitur grade, which would mean at least having 348/840 points, or overall grades in 13th grade, which would be a 3.5 (3-).
That is for Bavaria, where I go to school. I'm not sure about the other Bundesl
