General LSU question.

Hi, I am considering going to LSU and I had a question about it. If any of you have ever been there or know anybody who went there, could you tell me what the safety around and on the campus is like? Would I be safe walking around on campus? And are there nice apartments to rent later on? I don't want to be stuck up in some ghetto lol.

The campus safety seemed fine. I think you’d be fine walking around at all times, but at night you may want to ride the buses. The neighboring area that I saw wasn’t nice; I’m not sure if there are any nice apartments near campus, but there probably is seeing as how you’re in the capital of LA.

Thanks! I’m visiting the campus soon, so that will probably tell me.

The campus and surrounding areas seem reasonably safe. As long as you use common sense, you should be fine. The only area I would be concerned about is north of campus, between the student retail establishments and apartments and I-10, which seems pretty sketchy to me.

There are a lot of apt and house rental options for students. In fact, LSU does not have enough on-campus housing for freshmen, so many live off campus their freshman year. If you are serious about going to LSU and definitely want to live on campus, apply as early as possible and send in your housing application and deposit as soon as you are accepted. The earlier you do so, the better your chances are of getting your first choice in residence halls.

Alright, thanks! I plan on applying in July, so hopefully that will get me housing.

I don’t know if the application will be available yet in July.

Yes it is. I e-mailed a counselor and he said they put the application up July 1 for the fall 2012 term.

Hmm… first time I’ve been on here in awhile. But I decided to post because it’s another St. Fred’s grad.

Campus is pretty safe, but crimes do happen. So, use some discretion (i.e. don’t make a habit of walking campus by yourself at 3 am. Nothing might happen, but don’t test the odds). North side of campus is generally ghetto area, though some students still live within the first couple of blocks of campus there. Burbank, Brightside/Lee, and the last few years River rd by Lake Beau Pre are several areas that most off-campus students live. Some live further out by Nicholson lakes or Indigo park, but they are closer to the Gardere area, which isn’t as safe. There are very nice townhomes and apartments in the areas that I mentioned and are affordable if you are living with roommates.
