General Question About Merit Scholarships

I'm looking through the websites of the colleges that I'm applying to. And I'm looking at the scholarships, but I can't find any specific dates to apply for them. Sorry, kind of a noob at this stuff. When you apply do they offer you a merit scholarship if you are good enough? Or do you have to actually apply for that specific scholarship before/when you apply?

Often merit scholarships are automatic; you don’t have to submit an extra application for them. If you have a certain GPA or SAT score, or show achievement in your high school extra-curriculars, you will automatically be awarded certain merit scholarships. This information should be on a college’s website. If it’s not clear, call or email the admissions office to ask.

While some scholarships are “assured” for stats, they might also require a scholarship app to be completed as a formality.

Some schools have deadlines for scholarship consideration. Often those deadlines are in November or December.
