General questions about U of M and RC

Hi. I am a future RC student of UM (Class of 2015), and I have questions regarding UM and RC in general.

The following questions are questions regarding RC.

I heard that UM's dormitory is pretty bad except for South Quad where Honors students dwell. Since I am a RC student, I know that I am going to live in East Quad. How is it? (I am not very particular about the food, but I would like to know as much as possible about the LIVING condition. i.e) are there personal bathrooms, how old the dorm is, how large are the rooms, etc.

How does the first year seminar go? I have never been to colleges (so do most of you), and I don't even have a slightest idea what that course (or seminar) is about. Is it like a creative writing class? (Professors throw some prompts, and students answer those prompts in 5 pages-long essay... things of this nature)

I notice that there is language proficiency test in RC. Well, actually, I am a native Japanese, and English is my foreign language. Is there any penalty if I take Japanese to fulfill the foreign language requirement?

The following questions are questions regarding UM in general.

I found that there are serveral different ways to fulfill the ULWR (upper level writing requirement) depending upon one's concentration. If my concentration were mathematics or physics, how may I fulfill my ULWR?

Can Economics courses be taken in order to fulfill the social science requiremet? Can any foreign language classes be taken to fulfill the humanity requirement?

Is there any advantage to students who graduated from UM in going to UM medical school? I know that NYU and Duke have preference over those who graduated from their undergraduate schools. Does UM do the same?

I know that these questions are very difficult to answer, but please answer as many as you can even though you cannot answer all. I will GREATLY appreciate your time and effort to help me...

THANKS!

I’m a umich 2015 RC freshmen too so I can only answer your first question

1.) I would say North Quad (built last year) is 10x better than south quad, which resembles a commune from the outside (I’ve never personally been inside). East Quad is old and small, but not particularly run down. You’ll have a great central campus location which most freshmen don’t get. The RC lends itself to an “artsy” crowd. You will most likely have one roommate in a normal sized room for two lofts, two desks, two dressers, and two shelves, and a bit of a common space where you could squeeze a futon. You will have community bathrooms, but not in the sense of larger rooms full of stalls and urinals only, there are private bathrooms in the halls that are a single toilet/sink. Your meals will be “healthy” in comparison to most other cafeterias: eq offers a lot of vegan/vegetarian options.

Can’t answer all those questions but:

1) Talk to an advisor for more info, but I know physics majors’ have their advanced laboratory count as their ULWR.

2) If you don’t major (or minor?) in econ, then econ classes count towards SS req.

East quad is fairly nice to live in. “Small” isn’t a word I would use. But I think you will enjoy it, especially if you’re in the RC. I have yet to meet anyone in the RC who didn’t love it. And the location is really nice, very close to classes and some tasty, inexpensive places to eat. I moved somewhere else now but I still spend a lot of my time on that part of campus. The rooms are pretty big, some of them huge. You will very likely have a community bathroom that you will share with your hall, but you will get used to that quickly and it will be cleaned by the university so you don’t have to. It’s not going to be a luxurious experience but you have nothing to worry about.
