Residential college

Hey i was interested in applying to the residential college. Does anyone know what it's like there? Is it drastically different or isolated? Is it harder to get into than the reg schooll? thanks

It ain't isolated, It's in East Quad which is like right next to Central Campus. Sucky Dorms and Suck Dorm Food though lol

Can't residential college students eat in other places? lol.

umardarr - how are you 17 and in college? :/

haha, I'm turning 18 on Sept 24. It's a long story but I'll tell ya anyways. I was born in England so the school system is different there. When I came to the US in 93', the public school system didn't know what grade to put me in so they gave me some test or w/e. I ended up being placed in 2nd grade, but it didnt turn out so well. I had no clue what was going on or w/e. (if you think about it, if i stayed in 2nd grade and didnt have trouble, i'd be a soph at michigan by now!!! haha)...but..i did, so they knocked me back one grade and i ended up staying in first cause i did just as well or even better than the rest of the kids. So here i am, a 17 yr old as a fresh at UM... I think what should have happened is i should have been put back to kindergarden, hahaha, then I'd id be a senior in HS right now which fits my age cause right now everyone is turning 19 and im just about turning 18. But it doesnt really matter cause hell, i got into UM a year younger than everyone else which is sweet.

East Quad does have bad food, but you can eat anywhere. Even so, the food is pretty much the same. The dorm rooms are actually quite big. The rc is not harder to get into than regular lsa, but you should have an interest in humanities, creative expression, etc. It's not isolated, but a lot of people seem to cast people in the rc as "weird," but I have a lot of friends in it.

are you talking about the dorm rooms in RC specifically or the dorm rooms in UM are big in general?

there are no "rc" dorm rooms. East quad dorm rooms are fairly big.

so why do people cast RC students as "weird"? I was actually planning to apply there because I heard it was like a college within a college for a more familial college dorming experience.

nirvanarageatm there are rooms to considered to be "rc rooms" a whole section of EQ is split off for the RC.

Xeal- don't apply to the RC until you have visited it.

Alright, as the only RC student here, I feel it is my duty to put in a shameless plug.

THE RC ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

'nuff said.

But no, really. The RC is seriously the best decision I made coming in. Its not that RC kids are weird; because the RC has a very artsy academic field, we have a higher percentage of people whom you might consider weird. Its just a fact of life; people who are into creative writing etc. tend to not be your all-american abercrombie wearing prep (you gotta go to couzens to see that). But believe me, there are PLENTY of straight-up normal people here. East Quad is THE BEST dorming situation for freshman. Doors are always open, people troll the halls just to find other people to meet - nothing like the experience up at MoJo or Markley where I've heard that its very cliquish.

Academically. Your RC experience DEPENDS on your picking a seminar that you like. Period. B/c I'm in honors, I got stuck with one seminar. I dropped it, but again my choices were limited. I know if I said **** you to honors in June when I mean't to, I'd be in a PIMP seminar. But oh well. But, the coolest thing about the rc is the mix of residential and academic concepts; my teaching assistant for my RC seminar lives 2 doors...yes...2 DOORS down from me. Talk about getting help whenever. And, its cool to not have to go a long distance to see your friends in RC classes.

Is the RC isolated. Yes and no. There are people like me who loath to leave East Quad for any reason, because I'm not particularly fond of swimming through 25,000 people to get to class. So I tend to stick around. And then there are people like this kid who lives at the end of the hall, who seem to leave in the morning and not get back till the early morning. I will say this, RC kids tend to make their own fun in East Quad, but everyone will go out to a party every now and then.

Hmm, what else..OH. "RC" rooms. RC students room w/ RC students, so technically there are RC rooms. East Quad is set up like an O on top of a side-ways H. Most people in the O are RC; most people in the H are not. THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS! But the O is almost 90% RC, and the H is about 60-70% non-RC. I have RC and non-RC friends here in EQ.

About dorm room size. I'm in a 12X17 double. Compared to the rooms on the hill or South Quad, EQ is where its AT when it comes to dorm rooms. I have a friend in SQ who's in a 12X19...but its a triple. -_- In my room, we have ample room for a couch, a butterfly chair, plus all the various UM provided furniture.

Hmm..I think that's about it. Oh, xeal...don't worry about being cast as weird. Nobody is cast as anything here, the school's too big. Do what you want; find the programs that suit you. The RC combines interdisicplinary academics with a residential learning enviroment. Its very cozy, very friendly, and yes, a little bit off-kilter. No popped collar's and cocked hats in the RC my friend. If it sounds like something you'd like, apply, but don't be concerned with petty labels.

Whoo, I'm wore out. :-D

Thanks for your input....are the classes and the workload challenging? Are they interesting as well? Is there a greater percentage of girls in the rc because it combines very "artsy fields"?

Hmmm......as far as Rc writing seminars (which everyone takes), there are 15 of them, and they range. Some even have "honors designations". Personally, my writing seminar seems to not have a point, but its super easy, which works for me.

There are def. more girls here. The coolest thing about that is b/c they block off so many rooms for RC students, there are ALWAYS singles available to freshman guys. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GETTING A SINGLE. That's just lonely. -_-

Any more questions...PLEASE keep asking. We need more blood in the RC.

Hey kb,

How's EQ holding out for ya over there (since that's where the RC is located)?

Hmmm....okay.

Pros about EQ. Location location location. When you've got that 8:30 calc class at Denison, you'll appreciate being able to wake up at 8:15. Secondly, the people here are super nice. Compared to the hell hole that is Markley and the hill, I'd take EQ any day.

Cons. The food. Barely edible, and sometimes unrecognizable. Eat at your own peril. :-*

LOL. Ahhh... The food... I still have horrible memories about what they served to us while we stayed there at orientation. Right now, I'm a proud Barbour girl over on State Street (right accross from Angell) so if you ever want to stop by...

I don't think I'll get a chance to visit Umich but I had 2 cousins who went there.

One of them came back with depression and I spoke with her for like 2 hours about Umich and her experience. She told me that the one thing she regret doing was not applying to RC and she kept telling me to apply to RC if I go so I figure that there must be something good about it that stands out better than the other schools.

And are there limited courses in the RC? Because I saw that there weren't too many majors listed for the RC. My cousin said that you can make up your own major there, if you can't find anything you like. =D But I plan on also applying to the Ross School of Business through Preferred Admission. Also, can I take courses/majors in other Umich schools? Or do I have to be in that school to take its majors?

Your feedbacks have been extremely helpful kb, and everyone else! d=]

you know I've still haven't met anyone off CC yet lol

thats a darn lie, what about me?

remember me, the guy who didnt sleep in dorm, cause it was too hot, and came picking gurbage out of the room.
