General Questions

I'm thinking of applying to Richmond ED and I have some questions. These are mainly based on things I have heard about the school and I just want to hear some other perspectives! Thanks!

1) I know this is a pretty social school (Greek wise and parties on the weekends ect)which is great but during the week do students seem to care about their studies? Do people talk about current events sometimes or things other than last nights party?

2) I come from a pretty preppy area but just how preppy is Richmond? Do students who don't have tons of money to spend on clothes feel looked down upon or is it really not that big of a deal?

3) I really like the diversity of Richmond but I'm worried that the school is pretty divided. Do people tend to get along with each other?

4) I know its not a huge state school, but do people seem to care about the athletics/ and are proud of the school they go to?

5) How prepared are students going out into the workforce? How much does the career services department really help students find jobs/grad programs after Richmond?

6) What are peoples reactions when you tell them you go to Richmond? How well known do you think it is? Does it have a reputation, either good or bad?

Anything else you could tell me about student life would be great. I think that academically I would really like this could be the school for me, but I want some more information about life at Richmond day-to-day. Thank you so much for any answers you can provide!!!!!!

Wow! Based on that post, you are miles away from applying ED! IMHO, when applying ED, one needs to be absolutely, positively 100% certain that this is the school for them. If you have that many questions…you are not a good ED candidate.

Hi! Current UR student here! Here are my answers to your questions

1) We are very much a study hard party hard school. People do party a lot but they also care a lot about school. We do discuss some current event but last night comes up a lot too. I personally think it’s a great balance here. No pressure to do anything so you can really make what you want of the social scene here.

2) UR is pretty preppy but it’s not like a walking j crew magazine by any means. Most people do tend to dress nicer for class (girls in sun dresses, boys in polos) but there are also a lot of people here who don’t dress preppy. It really is not a big deal here. I feel as if the posts and reputation make it a much larger deal than it really is.

3) People here get along really well! I have noticed that people in the same activities tend to hang out with each other more than with others though. At the same time, there is no divisions between groups, people still talk and hang out together even if they are in different activities. People here are very nice and outgoing for the most part.

4) People here are proud to go to UR and have some school spirit but there is not a lot. For football games, people go to the first quarter then leave. For basketball, there is more spirit though. A lot of people wear UR clothes around campus. I feel as if people are proud to go here and love the school but are not in your face superfans.

5) UR has a very good job rate. I believe around 90% of the graduating class had jobs within 6 months of graduating. The business school has an even higher rate. The career center is also very helpful in helping you find internships and jobs. The alumni network is also very strong here.

6) So far, I have had very impressed and positive reactions when I tell people I go to UR. UR has a very good reputation and is becoming increasingly harder to get into each year.

I love UR and am very happy I applied ED and chose to come here. I hope I answered your questions and please let me know if you have any more!

Hi Kollege - I am a father of a UR Senior so my input is second hand. I agree with both previous posts. If you are applying ED anywhere, you should really be certain that is where you want to go.

My daughter would agree with jfrenchy on her comments. However, my daughter is not a partier or in a sorority. She is not looked down upon by those that are. She has never been pressured to go to parties. She has been involved with ballroom dancing, rock climbing and other activities. She does not come from a ton of money (promise!). She does not dress like she comes from a ton of money. Her middle class attire fits in just fine.

The new football statdium opened her freshman year. Attendance was pretty good from what I recall. However, since then as jfrenchy says, people pregame then hang out for a quarter or two then leave. Basketball is a different story due in part, I believe, that the school has had some good national coverage in the NCAA tourney a couple of times. We’re hoping they can do that again this year. Basketball games are a lot of fun to attend and there is a lot of UR spirit at the games.

We live in PA and when I tell people that my daughter is graduating from Richmond the reactions are positive. She will be going on to grad school so work is not a priority for her right now.

I don’t know where you hear that campus is “divided”. I asked my daughter and she does not think it is. It is very accepting of people of different cultures and backgrounds.

You really need to try to get to campus for a visit it you are considering ED. There are also a couple of Facebook pages that you can hunt down to get more input.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for all of your help! I have visited the campus twice and had excellent experiences. I am just making sure that some of the things I’ve heard are outdated/ exaggerated! Any overall experiences of student life would be super helpful. Again, thank you all!
