Hi Everyone, I am going to be a freshman this fall in the College of Engineering at U of M. Sorry of this question has been asked (I couldn't find a thread on it), but I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to take organic chemistry as opposed to general chemistry in my first semester. I took IB Higher Level chemistry, got a 6 and placed into organic on my placement exam. Some engineers at UM have told me that this is okay to do, so I'm looking for some other opinions to be safe. I've heard that organic can be really tough course, so what have your experiences been with organic chem, especially those who took the IB HL or AP credit? Thanks!

In my opinion, if your major does not require Orgo, don’t take it.

I placed into it as well but had no intention of choosing an engineering major that needed it.

If you really are interested in it though, go ahead. It’s just a much safer bet to take Gen Chem, get your 4.0, and move on

Hi there! In my opinion, even if you placed into Orgo, try not to take it your first semester. I placed into Orgo, but I wanted to let myself adjust to the difficulty of college first and decided to delay Orgo I and II by a year, instead taking both in my sophomore year. Both were still very difficult, but taking it a year later made all the difference for me. Like ThisIsMichigan said, though, don’t take it if your major doesn’t require it.
