Genital Warts and Cervical Cancer (for Girls)

So, are you getting the series of shots that prevents genital warts and cervical cancer, the HPV shots?

yes, but I'm a guy, so it's just for fun

I still dont think its right they're getting mass amounts of people to get that shot when its side effects arent that well determined...

Well, it was tested in 11,000 people, and they were monitored for 5 years before the vaccine was released, which from what I've read is pretty standard for vaccine trials. It doesn't appear to be riskier than any other newly-developed vaccine.

(Oh, and in response to the OP, I got the first round last week :))

"yes, but I'm a guy, so it's just for fun"

-LMAOO

i'm getting it as soon as i budget enough--$150 a pop x three rounds..

I got them... I actually got my third round of shots yesterday, and do they hurt like a mother. The nurse said it's because of the preservatives in them - to be honest, I got them b/c my parents made me. I don't trust it quite yet...

they still dont know what it does to your kids if and when you get pregnant, or any of the long term stuff, but you are free to do what you want...

I'm getting them--I've had 2 out of the 3 already. I figured it couldn't hurt to get them. They also didn't hurt me in a physical sense, but maybe that's just me. Shots don't bother me much.

im getting them since my doctor wants me to. i guess it's a good deal. i feel sorry for people who cant afford it though. apparently its pretty expensive without health insurance. =[

This is the area where having all these pharmaceutical commercials is of questionable value. I somewhat agree with you.

I think it's a deeply personal choice that should be based on serious thought, not a marketing campaign. If a woman's being sexually active, the cost-benefit comparison (the potential complications from the vaccine in the long run being the main cost vs. the possible avoidance of cancer) probably make it a good thing to do.

For me I compare the decision to have or not have corrective eye surgery. I know that without it, I will have to continue wearing contacts (or glasses). But no one, still, has lived through old age having had their eye muscles cut into and until we see a population that has and remains okay, I don't mind the hassle of contacts. I fear the possibility of early eye problems more. But it's a far cry from having to wear contacts to having cervical cancer.

I had a girlfriend who had HPV before we went out. She was a very non-promiscuous girl with a less-than-normal number of partners for someone like that who had gone through a good college and law school [assuming I know the normal number and that I am right about how many guys she had slept with, tee hee]. If she could get HPV, anyone who is at all active could, IMO.

I don't have a cervix -- I actually have an HPV dispenser though I hope it's not dispensing -- but if I did, I'd be getting the shots.

I may consider getting the shots for fun, though, too.

it be better to just not have sex until you're married or know the person very, very well and that they have been checked and aren't carrying any kind of disease or STD? A whole new concept I know......

sex is fine before marriage unless you're overly concerned with getting struck by lightning/turned into a pillar of salt/otherwise smited. just be responsible about it..

gardasil is just another form of protection against a common STD and cancer. anyone have a moral objection to sunscreen?

My doctor told me that she thinks that the shots are a great idea, and that she strongly encouraged me to get it, but my mom wouldn't let me because it hasn't been around for very long.

"i'm getting it as soon as i budget enough--$150 a pop x three rounds.."

huh? mine were free

^^ maybe it has to do with insurance coverage.

oh, i suppose. well, if you think about it, it doesn't make that big of a difference: 70% of 1/200 of all different types of cances.

^ sup good health insurance. not everybody has it. =] crappy american healthcare ftw!

my doctor is an idiot and suggested that I not get the vaccine because it's so new...

made the statment about responsible sex before marriage is ok
