Geographic Advantage

There is some interesting discussion about “local service ares” in this thread (pages 1 and 2).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/872218-doesnt-add-up.html

The only thing is the link provided is dated 9/17/10 which is when I beleive changes were made to the CSU system. AHHh will see…

I read this on the link that ralph4 provided. It was from 2009.

**High school seniors who meet the CSU enrollment criteria will have priority admission to their local school on most CSU campuses.

Cal Poly does not give priority to applicants in the Central Coast region, and only 9 percent of the current student body is from the Central Coast region. More than half of the current student body comes from the San Francisco or Los Angeles areas.

Enrollment in California community colleges was at its highest ever last year, and the chancellor of the California community college system expects even more this year.

**************************

Someone wrote: I don’t know how authoritative this source is, but it states that Cal Poly SLO is the only Cal State school that does not consider “service area” in their admissions:

“CSU designates geographical “service areas” for its campuses. Eligible applicants from high schools in a campus’s service area are guaranteed admission to some program at that campus with one exception: Cal Poly at SLO. Students in that service area who
don’t qualify are re-routed to a nearby campus.”**

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf

this link is dated 9/17/10 (which does not make me feel sure one way or another what the right answer is I just noticed the date was later than the above referencedik which indicated CP does not use geographical service areas. But again, who really knows???

San Luis Obispo

for freshman admission it says:
Each program is impacted. Students applying from high schools in San Luis Obispo, southern Monterey, and northern Santa Barbara counties are assigned additional points in the multi-valued selection criteria.
For transfer it says:
Each program is impacted. Students applying from community colleges from San Luis Obispo, southern Monterey, and northern Santa Barbara counties are assigned additional points in the multi-valued selection criteria.

Everytime I click on that link an error message from Adobe Reader appears and says “The file is damaged and cannot be repaired.” Strange. It does sound like you found a later statement, though. And, it definitely states they assign additional points. I forgot–which major did your daughter apply to at Cal Poly? It sounds like she’s hanging in there and determined to get in. Good for her!

2Leashes thank you good luck to you too. She is a Psych Major. How about you?

Freshman admission to Cal Poly SLO has been heavily impacted for the last several years.

It’s a great school. Good luck to all that apply! Apply early - don’t wait till the end of November. In fact, for all those reading this board for next year, apply as early in the beginning of the application process as possible - apps open October 1st for submission.

Remember, they don’t do letters of rec or essays, so it’s numbers based, as well as geography dependent to a certain extent. Applying early can’t hurt you and may get you a spot before they all fill up!

Actually, my daughter is currently a freshman majoring in Kinesiology. Best wishes to *your *daughter! I admire her perseverance.

Cal Poly SLO isn’t stupid people. It makes me ****ed off so many people are ruining it for the locals. The geographic advantage goes to the ones who went to a local high school and it’s quite an advantage from what I heard. It’s my parents and the ones who live in this area that pay taxes for that college not the people out of the area.

Taxes from specific locations are not earmarked for specific colleges. Locals have the same or as you have said more of an advantage to attend Cal Poly so why are you ***ed off?

Oh, so you think the people paying taxes don’t have any say? Psh, we have more say than you can imagine.

Apparently there are points given to ones who went to local high schools, AND for the local community college. So I will be getting points for both.

And the reason I’m mad is locals don’t get priority because so many people bend the rules that they have to be harder on locals getting in because some “pretend” to be, when they just came here a year or so ago.
