I’ve heard mixed things when it comes to an out-of-state applicant. Some say that it lowers your chances since Cal Poly is a state school and would much rather prefer Californians, however others say they like it more because OOS pays more tuition, especially now that there have been budget cuts. Can anyone clear this up?

At this point in time, it definitely helps. They want your $$$$$. Out of staters pay three times as much as Californians. Don’t get me wrong, the school is still a good deal imo, but the state is broke and they know that recruiting more OOS students will help them.

Ah that makes sense. I hope so! I need it to boost my application haha.

It helps for sure. The school is going out of its way to diversify and that includes OSS. Plus as mentioned above, the increased revenue is more than welcome.

There are geographic preferences for the SLO area in admissions but, unless something has changed this year, there are no extra admission points based on home state. There are additional scholarships available to OOS students once admitted to offset some (but not close to all!) of the OOS fees.

Thanks so much to both of you!
