Geographic Advantage

I have heard the CP SLO gives geographic preference to students. Does anyone know the details of this i.e. is it permanent or temporary address? My daughter lives in SLO and attends Cuesta, we live in LA County.

This is no longer true. I think many CSU’s used to give preference to local applicants, and I know Cal Poly used to maybe 20 years ago or so, but they don’t do it anymore. It doesn’t matter where you live. You might actually have a better chance as an out of state applicant because Cal Poly was trying to recruit more out of state students since they pay high tuition fees.

I looked at a map that showed what percentage of applicants come from different areas of California and surprisingly a small amount come from the Central coast. Compare that to the Los Angeles and Bay areas. They definitely have the largest percentage. I wish I could find that map here somewhere. Someone posted it recently. I’m not sure about transfers, though. Does anyone know if going to Cuesta makes it any easier to transfer into Cal Poly?

I don’t think going to Cuesta makes it any easier than any other CC

In the 2010 admission process Cal Poly issued bonus points to students who met certain criteria. For example, dependents of Cal Poly staff and local residents received bonus points. Therefore, there was some admission preference given to local residents. I don’t know if this will continue for 2011.

Here’s the geographic distribution for students admitted Fall 2008.

<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;

Here’s for fall 2009. Fewer OOS/international, and a higher percent from the Bay Area.

<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;

http://www.calpoly.edu/~ipa/publications_reports/factbook/fbfall09.pdf</a></p>

Cal Poly definitely gives preference to Cuesta Community College. It is by far the top feeder CC. See page 9 of the 2009 Factbook that shows the feeder community colleges. For freshman applicants, the top feeder high schools are listed on page 8. While the feeder high schools may change from year to year, it’s likely Cuesta will remain the top feeder CC.

Correlation does not imply causation.

Right. It may be that the Cuesta counselors may be better versed on the admission requirements for transfers.

hmmm… whatever you say vballmom. It does answer the question as to whether Cuesta Students have a better shot at admission to CPSLO than other CC students… the data reveals that they do. No geographic correlation intended, but you might be able to draw statistical conclusions when looking at absolute numbers of admissions by region relative to the total number of applicants per region. It’s quite likely there is a correlation.

I didn’t see that data in the link you provided. What you’d need to account for is differences in grades among Cuesta students vs those from other CCs, along with total number of applications from each CC, and acceptance rates. Are the acceptance rates from Cuesta significantly higher than from any other CC in California? I’d be interested in seeing that data if available.

My guess is that there are simply a higher number of students applying to Cal Poly from Cuesta than from any other CC. Whether they have a better rate of acceptance or not isn’t in the data from the linked pdf.

As an anecdotal aside, there are many students at Cuesta who were accepted to Cal Poly and dropped out after a quarter or two. They like SLO so much they want to hang out & attend Cuesta, then reapply as a transfer :)

what vballmom said, its true that more cuesta kids are going to be applying to cal poly meaning more acceptances from cuesta. since going to cuesta usually means you want to transfer to cal poly. like sac city for example, more acceptances from sac city to sac state are higher than say cal poly acceptances.

but that makes me wonder…if someone at cuesta has the SAME STATS as transfer student that goes to a different junior college, which student gets chosen. I’m thinking the cuesta one does. kinda unfair.

If you forego all other offers, attend Cuesta,pay living expenses, etc. to get into Cal Poly I think it shows personal fortitude and committment that might make you a better candidate than a student who lived at home and attended community college.

Cal Poly’s admissions are entirely statistics-based. Transfers apply giving their Minimum Semester Units, GPA and hours worked/hours spent in ECs. That’s it. There’s no judgment of character or fortitude or overcoming obstacles.

Cal Poly has Articulation Agreements with all California CCs, all UCs, and all CSUs as far as I can tell.

articulation agreements? cal poly doesn’t do ANY articulation agreements.

Really? No articulation agreements? Are you sure?

[Articulation Agreements - Office of the Registrar- Cal Poly](Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo)

i thought u meant like a transfer admission guarantee…that cal poly doesn’t have

Yeah, sadly, no guaranteed transfer to SLO. :(

Its like hitting the lottery, these days, getting into Cal Poly, SLO.

Cal Poly SLO’s local service area: “San Luis Obispo County and region north of Gaviota in Santa Barbara County”.

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf</a></p>

All CSUs have a local serving areas. The reason why there are fewer students from its local area is because the central coast has such a low population density.

Thank you CSU Hopeful this link answers in the affirmative my original question:
