Geographic Location. Is this an issue? oh and chance.

////i posted this in the chances subforum a few days ago. Not much luck there. The person that responded didn't help me since he didn't know much about CMU. Well, hopefully, I get some good help here. Thank You///

Hi, I'm a senior living in Guam. I was born and raised there. I am a first generation American. I go to a competitive IB High School and I do pretty well there. I will be applying Early Decision to Carnegie Mellon University. I was pretty confident in gettin in. But I've noticed that many of the CC people here have extremely high stats. I've become doubtful, and i'm starting to rethink whether or not i should apply to CMU. Anyways, How're my chances of getting into CMU through ED?

Here are my stats in a nutshell

grades in high school: 88~90% (our school doesn't use the gpa scale.)

Rank: 6/29

SATI: CR: 630 M: 770 W: 710 (june 2007 test, i took the SAT on january but I totally bombed it)

SATII: MATH 2C: 780, CHEM:670

ACT w/ writing: taking it in october.

Languages spoken:
Fluent- English, Korean, Japanese
Still Learning: French, Spanish, Chinese

Notable Accomplishments: Architecture Contest Winner, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Photography Calendar Contest Winner.

EC*: Service Club, Japanese club, Enviromental Club, Hiking Club, Student Council Representative (9th,10th,12th grade), Varsity Soccer, Varsity Volleyball (10th grade), Varsity Paddling (Crew? i think thats what americans call it), School Tutor, Orchestra (guitar and piano)
*Since I go to an IB school, 150 hours are required for diploma candidates and 100 hours are required for the others. So it's required to have EC's lol.

Jobs:
University of Guam Research Assistant (10th grade summer)-Actually, it was more of a paperwork job than a research job. The title of position was misleading. In any case, I got payed so I'm happy.
Construction Worker (11th grade summer)- 10 hrs each day, 5 days a week for 2~3 weeks.
Tutor (11th~present)-General Math tutor at local academy. M/W/F/Sa; 2hr each day.headache job

Instruments: Piano (5 years), Guitar (4 years), Violin (2 years)

Course Load: all IB classes and 2 AP classes (Stats and Physics)

AP/IB Exams: IB Economics- 6; AP Chem- 3(I screwed up big time); AP European History-4( I studied indepently)

I attended the CMU Pre-College for Architecture. Which may not seem like much, but it was really hard for me since it was literally on the other side of the world of Guam. The program was awesome, I learned a lot of new things there.

My stats aren't as high as some of the applicants applying to top schools (such as CMU) in CC.

But do I have an advantage since I live in Guam? I don't think CMU has had that many students from Guam before. I know one who did go to CMU, but other than him I don't think there has been anybody from Guam who went. Since CMU is looking for diversity in its student population, would they consider the lack of students from Guam in their admissions process?

Also, I'm an asian (korean) male. Would that lower my chances of getting in? I've heard that it's especially hard for asians to get into college. Is this true?

Also, in the event I am not accepted to CMU, can anyone give me a list of reach/match/safety schools that I should consider?

Thank You,

Are you applying for architecture, engineering or something else?

i will be applying to CIT as a civil engineer.

I'm too lazy to look up the admissions statistics from last year. I think you are a fairly solid match from what I recall. I suspect Guam, is a plus.

Thank you! anyone else that can help?

Your stats are a match for CIT, meaning you should get in. Being from Guam is probably a plus, although being an Asian-American is either neutral or perhaps a negative. If you were a native Pacific islander, I'd say you'd probably have a big hook.

Thank You I really appreciate it
