Geometry over the summer?

Hi guys, well I was wondering if I should take geometry the summer after freshman year or if I should double up sophomore year. I heard that the ACT involves a lot of geometry, so would taking geometry over the summer put me at a disadvantage? If I don’t I won’t be able to take AP Calculus BC because I did not get to take Algebra 1 during 8th grade. ( this is because I had spinal fusion and did not get high enough grades in 7th grade). I’m really interested in Stanford university but I know most people who get accepted there take calculus. I also need high ACT scores so if taking geometry in the summer is going to ruin my chances at a high score I’d rather double up. What do you guys think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, @stanford200381. I am a freshman in Geometry Honors right now. From what I have heard, you won’t use most of Geometry again after you take the class. The only Geometry needed for the future is trigonometry and basic shape taxonomy. About the ACT, lots of test prep books, have Geometry problems in them. These problems do not really require a whole year of Geometry and can be mastered by practice with the ACT Prep books. If you really are interested in STEM, I would definitely recommend taking Geometry over the summer because of the reasons above.

However, the class is pretty challenging in the beginning because it is a different kind of math compared to Algebra. If you are not planning on majoring in STEM in college, I think it is best to take Geometry in school. If you are interested in STEM, I do recommend taking Geometry either over the summer or as an elective. In terms of whether you should take it as an elective or take it over the summer, this is really by preference. Taking it as an elective will help you remember it more as you will be studying Geometry over a longer period of time. Taking it over the summer will help you learn the basics you need but get you to a higher level.

Good luck and have a good day!

It depends on you,if you are very determined then you can even self-study geometry. Khan academy, yaymath and many others are great resources, even better than some real teachers. I take algebra in 8th grade and test out of geometry (self-study) then I take algebra 2 through the summer now I am in pre-cal for freshman. So it really just depends on you, if you are a very organised person, then good. But if not you should consider that. Oh and geometry is pretty easy in my opinion, the only hard parts are circles and trigonometry, the triangles ones are very easy. Hope this helps!

Can you take Geometry and algebra online during summer maybe via FLVS ?

@Colina1234 I could take geometry, but I heard that algebra is to much to cram into the summer.

What math did you take in 9 th grade? because I had the same problem but I had to take algebra 1 during 9 th grade

@Colina1234 I’m taking algebra 1 in 9th.

I took geometry over the summer as an incoming freshman. Geometry isn’t that prominent in your future classes. If you’re pretty strong in math, you should be fine.
