Hi,can you guys give me some informations about George school,I am an international students from china.I know GS is not good as the Big ten and other famous school. And I want to study in IVY+MIT+STANFORD,wharton school is my first choice. And is there anyone have been to GS?

George is a very good school–it has a unique community which is not for everyone. It is a Quaker school, very open and liberal. Students are not very competitive with each other and are more laid back than at other schools. I’ll emphasize again that it is such a liberal community that those with conservative views or life experiences may have an adjustment. George has an IB program and is a really great place!

I’ll be starting GS in the fall as a sophomore. Can’t Wait! I love this school. I hope I’ll get a teaching assistant service project in Venezuela or France Junior year. I’m still not sure what IB courses to take. ToK seems like a mind-*uck.

My son chose GS over a very sought after NE prep school. We couldn’t be happier and relieved with his decision. The admissions rep at the declined school seemed a little taken aback when hearing this! Wanted an accounting of the decision making process to which we sent a very well crafted and sensitive email with nothing but praise for the declined school.

Ironically, the current head of school at GS is the former head of school at the declined school.

I joke with my son that his deal-sealer was the ability to address teachers and faculty on a first name basis (no Mr. Smith, Ms. Martinez, its John, Mariam, etc)

Recent GS news:

[Obama Nominates GS Alum for Treasury - George School](http://www.georgeschool.org/NewsAndEvents/2009/Obama%20Nominates%20GS%20Alum%20for%20Treasury.aspx)

I hadn’t heard the news that your son had picked GS, nylecoj. Congratulations!

Although calling teachers by their first names is typical of Quaker schools, I would say that the atmosphere at GS is very special. There is a real emphasis on international understanding and respect for individual differences in an environment of collaboration and mutual support.

When my daughter was admitted last year, the package included a little book about the tradition of playing Four Square at George School and how the game could be an analogy for life at the school in general.

Someone on this forum once proposed that one marker for a certain difficult to define quality he was looking for in a school was whether they offered frisbee as a sport. GS offers Frisbee.

nyleco – Congratulations to your son! It sounds like he kept his head straight and picked the school that was the best fit for him.

nyleco & Brookline – After school starts, it would be great if you would post about the George School from time to time. It sounds like it would be a great choice for some applicants. I read that they are slowly receiving a large donation that should allow the school to offer even more. I forget the amount – Was it 200mil donated over 10years? Something like that. If it wasn’t invested in financials and Madoff funds, it should create many opportunities for the school.

nyleco-congratulations. Deciding where to go has been the most difficult part of this long process. I am sure your son will do great at GA.

I agree, let us all know about GS school, it will help combat this notion that the only options are the NE prep schools.

Yes, please keep us updated!

My son discounted GS as being “too close” to our home, but it fits his personality. Now that he has been waitlisted at his dream school I think he may be more open minded if he must go through the process again (still keeping fingers crossed he won’t, but…)

Grejuni, Emdee, Burb Parent- Thanks to you all for your well wishes!!! I am very excited about the opportunities this acceptance presents for my son and yes, I will post frequently…as a newbie prep school and GS parent, I’m sure I will have much to share!

BP - the donation that you’re thinking of is the $128.5 million given by alumna Barbara Anderson in 2007. It represents the largest single donation ever made to an independent school in US History.

Notnim- here’s hoping your son’s dream school’s waitlist will present him with an great opportunity very soon!

GS is one of two schools my son has to make a decision on by April 10th. We went to the admitted students and family day yesterday. It was very well run with several workshops on various programs and activities that they provided in the school. The campus is beautiful, especially with the trees and flowers coming to bloom. I wholeheartedly believe that GS is at par with the “prestigious” New England schools but values their anonymity which is consistent with Quaker philosophy.

WSCPhillies-

We attended yesterday as well. I agree the campus is very beautiful but I wish I’d taken the time to stop by the stables to see the horses, lol. The explanation of the importance of the IB was enlightening but it’s also good to know that students have so many options with combining IB/AP, strictly AP, IB diplomas, IB certificates, etc. The visit confirmed what we’d grown to know in the past several months. GS offers an intangible element (the “magic” they spoke about in the wrap-up) that I neither saw nor felt from the many schools we considered. My son says he’s taking the road less traveled. I think his journey will be exhilarating!

Congratulations to your son! GS is a very special school. We have to make a decision by the end of the week. I agree that the IB Director was very informative about the distinction between AP/IB and certificate vs. diploma programs. What we like about the curriculum is that you can make it as rigorous as you want or just follow your passion in the arts. We are still contemplating on the boarding experience mostly likely stemming from parental selfishness. He’s also been accepted to a Quaker day school in the Philadelphia area.

Boarding has been a great thing for our family, feel free to PM me about parental selfishness!

And let me know how everything turns out. I have my eye on GS for D2.

Hi! If you are interested in studying in PA, why don’t you also consider The Hill?

Looks like one of this year’s teams actually beat MIT, taking first place in one of the Int’l competitions…

Does anyone know about George school’s total endowment, after the $128 million gift received in 2007? Point out the source of the information if you could.

[The Barbara Dodd Anderson Trust - George School](http://www.georgeschool.org/Support%20GS/The%20Barbara%20Dodd%20Anderson%20Trust.aspx)

Thanks, but I couldn’t find the total endowment number in that article.

Wow this thread hasnt been used in a while…
I am a sophomore and am looking into entering the George School for junior year. Is that common? I am worried I will be the only new person!
