Hi, so I’m accepted to the Arts and Sciences school at GW with a Bio major and Pre-med track but don’t know much about these programs. I consider myself a really good student and love school in general (yes, basically a big nerd), so would this school give me hard classes and a good chance of getting into med school? I also know GW is a big party school, and I don’t like partying at all. Would that make it difficult to find good friends? I’m deciding between GW and Fordham, so I really have no idea which school would be better for me. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!
I think you’ll find the pre-med track at GW challenging. It does a great job at weeding-out students that don’t have what it takes. As far as your chances at getting into medical school, yes, the school will give you what you need. In addition to doing well in your classes, there are a lot of volunteer opportunities at the hospital (not to mention classes that will have you working in the hospital). Your advisor at school will be able to tell you about all the options you have. I worked in the hospital for my last two years (as a tech in the ER) and most of the other students I worked with (whether they were techs, scribes, or EMTs) ended-up in GW’s med school.
As far as partying, I wouldn’t say that GW is a “big party school.” Are there parties? Sure, but non-partiers won’t feel left out. There are a lot of students only there for the education and internship opportunities.
I also wouldn’t worry about finding friends, You’ll meet a lot of people your first couple weeks. My advice is be as open as possible during this time- strike-up random conversations with other students, ask to sit next to others when grabbing some food. I think that you’ll also meet a lot of people interested in pre-med. You’ll all be taking the same classes in the beginning (intro to bio, intro to chem, etc). Similar interests and goals are the best ways to make friends.
Good luck, and feel free to shoot me a message if you’ve got any other questions!
Thank you so much, your response is really making me want to attend this school now!!
