George Washington Engineering vs Drexel Engineering

Hi, I'm looking towards attending one of these two schools. They have both offered me similar amounts of money. I enjoy both campuses, but if anyone could give helpful tips about anything related to these schools, it would be much appreciated. :)

I am certain that i will either major in electrical engineering or double major in cs/ee, but I read some really nasty replies here about George Washington engineering. However, these were from a few years ago, so I wasn't sure if they'd really stepped their game up or not. I realize that Drexel engineering is pretty highly ranked, but I was hoping to get a little more insight because this decision will certainly be very hard for me.

P.S- I do think I like how GW has a smaller engineering school, but I don't really know what to make of it.

I’m a freshman in SEAS at GW right now and I really like it. I’m majoring in Systems Engineering and Computer Science. One of my favorite things about SEAS is how small it is. I recognize so many people in all of my engineering classes which is really nice.

As a freshman in SEAS, you’ll get to move in a week early. All through the week they’ll have tons of different excursions into the city to explore different parts of DC which is really fun. I got my research card for the Library of Congress during one of these excursions and went on a midnight walking tour of the monuments which I really enjoyed.

Then the first weekend you’re there, they’ll bus you out to West Virginia to an adventure camp which is SUPER fun! I had a blast at the retreat and you meet tons of other freshmen and learn more about SEAS, the different majors as well as student life at GW.

Once you get back to GW, for the first couple weeks you’ll be in a general Intro to SEAS class. During the couple weeks you’re in this class you’ll learn about all the different majors within SEAS as well as learn how to use MATLAB and you’ll do a couple other mini-projects. Then for (I think) the middle 8 weeks of the semester you’ll be in an Intro to whatever major you’re interested in class and you’ll do lots of projects in there. I think almost every major had to build some sort of robot. These classes are a great way to find out more about the major you’re interested in and decide if that’s really what you want to major in! Then you’ll come back to the Intro to SEAS class for the last few weeks of the semester and finish the semester by building a website!

In addition to all the fun things you get to do as a freshmen, SEAS offers free tutoring for sciences, math and computer science which is really helpful and FREE!

Also, just because GW isn’t an engineering school doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good engineering program. GW is really trying to build up SEAS by bringing in professors who care about teaching just as much as they care about research and they’re building a new engineering building which is scheduled to be done in early 2015 I believe.

Wow thank you so much. This is very helpful!!!

My son was also torn between Drexel, GWU and Marquette. However, after visiting all of them, he has chosen GWU. Thank you, spoonster, for that info above, we had no idea that’s what was going to happen the first semester and it sounds great! He is pretty excited to be going to GWU, and we are all excited that we get to visit such an amazing city. Can’t wait! Can you give us some pointers on which Freshman Housing, which ones you recommend since he is also in the SEAS. Any pointers on how to get into the housing you want? Thanks

There’s an engineering affinity in Thurston for freshman that lots of people do. Everyone that I know who is in that affinity is pretty close and lots of them are doing it again for next year! To do that, I think on the housing application there is an option somewhere for the engineering affinity towards the beginning of the application.

Also, you don’t have to rank all the dorms on your application. I don’t know how true this is but if he didn’t want to live on the Vern, I’ve heard that you shouldn’t put any of the Vern options on your application. Also, I believe this year GW has rankings by room type within each dorm so the same thing applies in terms of only putting things on your application that you want.
