My son is having a hard time deciding. Case is giving much more aid, but DC seems to possibly provide more opportunity, as well as a brand new engineering school. Any advice?

Didn’t even know GW had engineering, whereas Case is very respected. Case students have ample opportunities. Unless going to school in DC is a priority, and you’re willing to pay more for the privilege, GW is inferior to Case.

Case all the way.
What type of engineering is he interested in?
Does he have other interests?
Does he want Coop opportunities?

What were your impressions while visiting? Where did your S feel more comfortable? Hopefully you did admitted students days and got a feel for the engineering schools at each. Case is highly regarded for engineering…do you have any trepidation about being the first in a new engineering school? Good luck with your decision…maybe the money differential will be enough to help make the decision easier…what opportunities in DC are appealing vs. those available at Case?

Not sure what you mean by opportunity at GW, but my freshman son at CWRU is studying engineering and he couldn’t be happier with his choice. He came in with a lot of advanced credit so he’s taking mostly upper level math/physics/engineering classes and has found the professors are accessible and helpful, and the other students are very collaborative and supportive. The students there seem to mostly be smart, friendly, nerdy types who study hard but are not super competitive amongst themselves. The classes are very hard but the students know they are getting a first-class education and they are prepared for the challenge.

If this sounds like an environment where your son would thrive then the additional aid at Case Western should make it an easy choice. Feel free to ask other questions and congratulations to your son for some excellent acceptances! Both are really good schools but I agree with Chardo that CWRU is better known for engineering than GW.

^ I have two brothers who attended GW, and a son currently studying engineering, and I didn’t even know GW offered it.

Depends on which engineering discipline, although it’s safe to say case is well known to be an excellent STEM university overall and probably one of the best of the private engineering universities.

By the way, the GWU engineering school is not “new,” but they are constructing new engineering facilities. Perhaps that what you meant. Also, GWU does not have a major in every traditional engineering discipline, like Ch-E for example. That may not affect your son if he has no interest in Ch-E.

Thank you all for excellent input! This really helps.

I knew GW had engineering only because when we toured they mentioned that it was one of the few schools that had an equal M/F ratio. We were looking at GW for my IR kid, but he hated the lack of campus. It doesn’t look like you can do chemical or materials science at GW from my quick look at the offerings. Case is better known, but as long as both are ABET accredited the differences probably aren’t huge, as long as the particular course offerings your kid wants are there.

Correct, there is no Ch-E major at GWU at present. The Chemistry major can include a specialization in Materials Chemistry (i.e. Inorganic Chemistry).
