GW vs. Case

Hey everyone! This is another one of those annoying comparison questions. I apologize in advance for being cliche!

I applied to ten schools total. I am looking to be major in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering. As of now I am choosing between two of the six schools that I got into: GWU and Case Western Reserve University. The other four were either safety schools or state schools that gave me insufficient financial aid.

GW's engineering school is relatively new, so I am unsure as to how much I can trust its quality. GWU as a whole is reputable, so I am slightly comforted that I can trust it. Also, since GW's SEAS is new, I am lead to believe that they will put a lot of energy into making sure that their engineering students graduate in such a way that it reflects positively among the school. I love Washington DC and the fact that GW is urban. As an extracurricular I sail. Sailing is pretty important to me. The Chesapeake Bay offers incredible sailing opportunities so this is a draw for me.

Case Western Reserve University has a reputable, well-established engineering school with everything that I could ever want to study. Education-wise, I would pick Case over GW. Case is located in suburban Cleveland and has limited sailing opportunities.

The financial aid for both of the schools made it so that it would cost about the same to go to both places. GW might be a little bit cheaper.

I partly wrote all of this so that I could make my thoughts coherent for myself, but if anyone could give me an opinion or some guidance, I would be very greatful.

Thank you!

FWIW: DC's a great city, certainly better than Cleveland; the Chesapeake is a nicer place to sail than Lake Erie. But Case certainly seems better education wise, and that's what you're going to college for so it should weigh heavily. One other thing you might look into: Internship opportunities. I know GW has a lot of great internships -- maybe even one working for NASA. Good luck with your choice

Two great schools to choose from. Sailing on Lake Erie is nice, especially during the Air Show or when there are concerts at Nautica, actually. A lot of people sail in Cleveland. CWRU has some nice internship possiblities for engineering students; check with your department there.

CWRU is not in a suburb. It is in Cleveland. It is part of the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland, where all of the museums and Severance-Hall-home-of-the-Cleveland-Orchestra are, and it borders on Little Italy. CWRU kids do often hang out in Coventry, which is in Cleveland Heights. Consider the Grog Shop.

CWRU has a much better meal plan than GWU. DC might be more fun for a college student though. Definitely better public transportation in DC than in Cleveland.
