Georgetown Chances

Hi I am a junior in HS hoping to apply to Georgetown next year to the SFS (hoping to Major in international politics). It’s my number one school so I wanted to see what others think my chances may be or if anyone has advice to help me develop a stronger application!
Stats:
School doesn’t do rank
4.0 GPA (4.5 unweighted)
33 ACT, hoping to take it again and aiming for a 34
I am supposed to take SAT subject tests but they got cancelled bc of COVID-19
5 APs by the time I graduate (my school only offers 8)
Most other classes honors (again, my school is weird they only offer few honors)

ECs:
NHS, probably on the board next year
Varsity Swim for four years
Started a Human Rights Club, it is what I am most passionate ab!
Political Club
Lacrosse
MUN (my school doesn’t take it seriously which stinks)
Diversity Leadership Council
Eucharistic Minister (Catholic school haha)
I have a lot of service hours, and during this whole pandemic thing I have organized a neighborhood food drive so that could be something idk.

Worked as a Lifeguard and was supposed to work as an election judge in the primaries but it was unsafe to do that bc, again, COVID-19
Member of UNA-USA and Amnesty International (two grassroots human rights organizations), and within Amnesty I am applying to be on their Youth Collective, which is a national leadership body, and I think I should be on that.
I am also super involved with my Youth Group to help lead and direct retreats for underclassmen.

Other:
White female, part Hispanic
Small Catholic school in Midwest
Upper Middle Class
I Should have pretty strong Teacher recs, I’m going to get an extra one from my AP Euro teacher last year who went to Georgetown, bonus!

Please be honest, I have zero expectations so I’m just hoping to figure out where I stand.

Hi there!

I recently got accepted to Georgetown so here is the advice I can give you.

-Just by going through the accepted students facebook group, I can already tell that international politics is an extremely popular major. Everyone and their mother has done MUN, speech and debate, etc. That given said, you are really going to have to distinguish yourself. Focus on a few activities that you are passionate about and excel at them, and do your best to articulate your passion in your supplemental essays. Definitely quality over quantity. I had 2-3 “flashy” EC’s and then your regular, run of the mill stuff like honor societies and sports.

-In terms of testing, it seems like you are on the right track. I’d definitely try to get that act score up, it’s a tad on the low side, aim for at least a 34 to be safe. But I wouldn’t worry too much, you still have time. Last admission cycle they recently updated their sat subject test policy where you can send ap scores in lieu of the 3 “strongly recommended” subject tests, so I’d keep that in mind. I personally hate subject tests with a passion. I got an 800 on Spanish, a language that I speak fluently, a 720 on Math II (not so good, and especially not since I applied as a math major). I also got a 4 on all my ap exams at the time of application (chem, bio, apush, and lang). Definitely not the best testing and I thought it would keep me out! Hope that offers you some comfort

-My best advice for you is to keep in mind that colleges want a well-rounded class. That means they want the tuba player who can code, the aspiring doctor who is super passionate about poetry, etc. Try to create a narrative for yourself, a tagline of sorts, that distinguishes you from the rest of the applicant pool. Also if you apply early action to GU, which I recommend you do, don’t worry if you get deferred!! So many people do, myself included, and then end up getting in regular decision.

The college application process is a whirlwind. You learn a lot about yourself throughout it. It can be hard and extremely random and unfair at times, but don’t let that get to you. Just put your best foot forward and remember everything happens for a reason. You got this!!!

Current student here. You certainly in many ways seem to be on the right track but for lack of a better word your profile seems a tad basic. My sense is that you should aim to focus on some of the softer factors: write compelling and unique essays showing what sets you apart and what sets Georgetown apart for you, and things like recs and the interview can help with that as well.

Current SFS junior – I’d disagree with what someone above commented about colleges wanting well-rounded kids. The SFS seems to like the so-called pointy model vs well-rounded kids much better, just because the SFS itself is very specialized towards international relations. So I’d say your ECs are on the right track – it lets you show why you’re passionate about IR, and that’s something you can highlight in your supplementary essays. From my experience, the SFS seems to prefer applicants who know that they’re going to study IR and are all-in on it rather than the more generalists in the College, but of course that might just be my own opinion. Community service is also something that Georgetown as a whole really likes to highlight – they really like to see a commitment to that, so you have that in your favor as well.
