Georgetown Culture

Hi! I'm considering transferring to Georgetown from UMD (I'm a freshman right now). Part of the reason I want to transfer is the academics, and I'm not really worried that Georgetown wouldn't be challenging enough, which it my problem at UMD right now. However, the other reason I want to transfer is because I don't feel like I really fit into the social scene - although I've found a few friends, I feel pretty isolated in such a huge school and because I don't like sports or parties, I've found it hard to find people with common interests.

So I was wondering, how would you describe the social atmosphere at Georgetown? Is it small enough that the school feels like a community rather than a city? Is it easy to find people who aren't just into partying all the time? And if you have any experience with transfers is it particularly hard for them to make friends (like have social groups already formed by the end of freshman year) or is it pretty easy to get involved?

Thanks so much for sharing any experiences you think might be helpful! :)

Lots of social groups do get formed on the basis of freshman year housing and such. However, I would say that most socialization revolves around student groups: club sports, publications, service groups, etc. etc. Student groups frequently throw parties, and the people in them spend a lot of time together, so it’s only natural. Due to the lack of recognized social fraternities, it is not a hierarchical kind of social environment either, which I always appreciated.

So long story short: I think it is pretty easy to get involved and make friends, particularly through student groups, as a transfer.
