Georgetown McDonough vs. WashU Olin for accounting student

Hey currently I am admitted to McDonough School of Business in Georgetown University and Olin business school in Washington University in St. Louis. I am a rising junior majoring in Accounting and I wonder which school have a greater academic atmosphere and more access to job opportunities. Thanks a million!!!

@Jessica44 I don’t know too much about Wash U, but I do know that Georgetown has an excellent reputation! I would love going there. They have a lot of great professors, and have access to Washington D.C.

Are you a transfer student? Georgetown has a better reputation in business, but both are high caliber schools. You should pick based on cost and personal fit. While Georgetown doesn’t officially have Greek life, it still has a fratty vibe, and it also has the whole D1 atmosphere. Wash U, on the other hand, is more laid back even with Greek life and basically no emphasis on varsity sports.

I’m a CPA and I’d consider them to be academic peers. If you do well at either school you should be in great shape. I’d look at factors such as fit and affordability in making your decision.

As an aside, keep in mind that for a CPA one now needs 150 college credits (most college BS degrees are about 120 credits) so many go on for a one year MS in accounting.

Yes, I am transferring from George Washington University which is also in D.C.!

FWIW, it may be the case that, for accounting jobs/ on-campus interviewing, Georgetown recruiting leans more East Coast, and Wash U recruiting leans more Midwest. I don’t know that this is the case, just a guess.

^^^^ If the OP is interviewing with the large public accounting firms (Big 4 and other large public) location shouldn’t matter very much. My S went through the interview process for accounting pretty recently (was at college in the Midwest and wanted to work in NYC). In these cases an applicant will have the first interview on campus and if the firm wants to proceed they will refer him/her to the office he/she is interested in working at. My S did some of the office interviews when he was home over break and one firm paid for him to fly back to NY for the office interview.

When location WILL matter is if the OP looks at smaller accounting firms. One of my S’s friends went to William & Mary and ended up getting a job offer in Richmond (and he woudl have preferred coming back to NY).
