Help me! Wash U vs Georgetown

I will major in econ, I guess.
But I haven't really decided yet.

Both wash U in St.Lois and georgetown are amazing schools, and I kind of prefer georgetown so far. (even though it is not SFS :()
My counselor recommended wash u but I don't really know a lot about it.

Which school would be better?
Help me!

i’m actually in the same situation except i’m between business schools.

don’t know which one to pick

georgetown has dc, but i think i might like wash u more

They are both great and about equal in the area that you want. IT would depend on where you want to work too. Along the east coast, Georgetown enjoys a much greater prestige while the reverse is true in the midwest. Out west, Georgetown is probably a bit more respected.

However, at this level, the decisions should not be about prestige as they are both roughly even regardless.

WashU is a better quality of life, though Georgetown could be more social.

Econ at both schools is probably proughly the same, though I think Olin might be a slightly better business school than McDonough.

If you want to work on Wall Street, Georgetown is better represented there…though recruiting will inevitably take place at both schools.

This sort of statement always makes me shake my head in disbelief. If you don’t know much about WUStL, then why on earth did you apply?

You haven’t given us anything to go on. We can’t help unless you tell us what you’re looking for in a college…more info, please.

Visit both if possible. It really is the best way to decide.

Well, I’m an international student who has never been to U.S before.
So, it would be impossible for me to visit both places and frankly, even though I looked at many college websites, it all said that both schools are great. (even though I can see a few different distinctions.)

I want to go to graduate school, so I guess I prefer the school which has higher graduate school acceptance rate and higher undergraduate reputation.

keb, what type of grad school? med? law? PhD?

specifics please.

overall, their undergrad populations are roughly the same. The students are all basically from the top 5-10% of their High Schools at this caliber of school.

Grad School would depend though. I can guarantee you that Georgetown will have better Law School feeder apps, but that WashU would win for Med School.

Law school probably, maybe MBA. I haven’t decided but definitely not med school.
Wash U seems to be focused on biology or biology-related area.
(which I don’t really like)

Ooh, how about vanderbilt or tufts?

Yes, the 8% of the student body majoring in biology would certainly decrease your chances at law school.

Since we are not talking about the Walsh SFS, I think that, department by department, Wash U is academically better than Georgetown’s A&S by a significant margin. It is also much better endowed (by a margin of 5 to 1), and this will be clear by walking through the two campuses. Wash U’s facilities are clearly superior (the campus reminds me of Princeton). Georgetown tends to ride on the reputations of its SFS and law schools (both of which are excellent), but its CAS is really not that strong–except for the fact that it tends to attract excellent students. The science labs at Georgetown, for example, are rather pitiful. The campus is also surprisingly small. It is, however, along with Notre Dame, among the best Catholic institutions in the country if that is a factor for you.

But Georgetown is in DC which, frankly, is a much better city than St. Louis (at least in my east coast oriented brain). It is also clearly the best university in DC, which tends to raise its stature.

So it really depends on what’s more important to you.

Georgetown is working on its science facilities, including adding a new Science Center hopefully to open by 2011. Organic Chemistry laboratories are already in brand new facilities. The Health Studies School has a new molecular and cellular biology laboratory and teaching facilities. Biology labs are definitely ancient looking, but workable. There will be new courses in cancer biology, human functional anatomy (with cadaver labs), etc. So sciences are not horrid at Georgetown, though Wash U most likely has nicer facilities overall.

Economics at Georgetown is rigorous. And you not only have courses in Economics, but also Political Economy, International Economics, and International Political Economy, with subspecializations in fields like int’l economic theory, economic growth, int’l finance and commerce, econometrics, etc. Don’t know if you’ll have that breadth of opportunities in Economics at Wash U.

Anymore inputs???
I am still confused and enrollment day is coming!

at this point, I don’t think I really care about the whether, location, or atmosphere.

Which one is ‘academically’ better?
Wash U or Gtown?
Please help!

Academically speaking, Washington U

If you are looking to get an MBA, Olin undergrad is the #1 MBA feeder school in the country.

Academically, they are about equal, so if you’re an international student and you are leaning towards Georgetown, then go to GU. Not only does it have strong economics department, but it has an international student body, and shares the same city with the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), US Treasury, Inter-American Develoment Bank, Federal Reserve Bank, think tanks, etc. That means amazing adjunct professors, guest speakers on campus, and internship opportunities. Plus, more international direct flights doesn’t hurt.

So you have the choice of four years in Washington, DC, or four years in St. Louis. Hmm.

There is the Arch…

I’d say they are about equal in academics. IMO, I think G-town has more influence/prestige, particularly on the east coast–assuming that is even important to you.

washU has a beautiful campus…though st. louis may not be the most exciting place…exorcist was filmed at georgetown :)

Honestly, I don’t think WashU has more prestige in the midwest. I never heard of it until the presidential debate was held there. Everyone knows about Georgetown though, and it is the dream school of many of my friends here in Minnesota.

Honestly, no one I have talked to knows about WashU. That’s wierd considering how strong it is academically.

Anyways though, I’d choose Georgetown in a second.

“Along the east coast, Georgetown enjoys a much greater prestige while the reverse is true in the midwest.”

I don’t agree with that. In Chicago, I think people think more highly of Georgetown than Wash U. At the very least, Georgetown has an equal reputation here.

This would be an easy, easy call for me: Georgetown.

Georgetown!

WashU is a very good school, and comparing them both academically might be splitting hairs… but the opportunity you will have in D.C. makes this decision obvious.

I know several people across all schools at Georgetown, and none of them have ever been denied an internship. In D.C., you will be treated like a king if you say you go to Georgetown.

As for the rest of the world, many people have never even heard about Washington University in St. Louis, but almost everyone has heard about Georgetown University.
