Georgetown, Notre Dame, GW, BC, NYU

Hey guys :)

I'll chance back!

I am currently a junior in high school. I was adopted from China, so I do not necessarily have the stellar test scores of other Asians. What are my chances of getting into: Georgetown, Notre Dame, GW, BC, NYU?

I transferred to a much more challenging high school in the middle of sophomore year, which hindered my availability of AP courses junior year. The only APs I could have taken junior year were AP Lit and AP Euro. I took AP Euro first semester sophomore year, but had to drop it when I transferred. I am currently in AP Euro now again for that reason. I am worried because that is my only AP, however all my other classes are honors.

My current course load is
H Math Analysis- A (pre-calc/ pre-sat)
AP Euro- A
Brit Lit & Adv. Composition- A
H Physics- B+
Psychology- A (elective, first semester)
Evolutionary theory- A (elective, second semester)
Concert Band- A (elective, both semesters)
H Spanish III- A
Death and Dying- A (mandatory religion, first semester)
Moral Theology- A (mandatory religion, second semester)

This gives me a 4.2 GPA weighted. My overall CUM for sophomore and junior year is a 4.0. My school does not rank.

SATs:
Writing- 680
Math- 670
CR- 700

I'm taking them again to improve these! I am also going to take the Bio Subject test (I want to major in biology, and ultimately be a plastic surgeon), Physics, and Spanish.

ECs:
Viola (6 years, Delaware Youth Symphony Orchestra and All State Orchestra)
Track (Grades 10, 11)
Cheerleading Varsity (11)
Volunteer at St. Francis Hospital (90 hours)
Vacation Bible School Volunteer (60 hours, over 3 summers)
Summer job at a sushi restaurant
Asian Club
Mock Trial (11)

Senior Year Course load:
I will take:
AP Calc
AP Bio
H Spanish IV
Economics or Marine Bio (elective)
Possibly AP Lit and AP World History... most likely 1 or the other to avoid overload.

For ND are you a legacy or Catholic?

I am Catholic. I was hoping that being Asian would be an advantage for Notre Dame. I also forgot to add my teacher recs will be very good! My grandfather went to Georgetown if that qualifies me as a legacy?

Thank you for chancing my thread!
I wish I could help you more. While familiar with the names of all of the colleges/universities you have mentioned, I honestly don’t know much about their admissions in comparison to other colleges.
The best I can do for now is say that from what I’ve heard, you seem like a great applicant. I’d suggest trying to take invest time in ECs relevant to your projected major if possible. Do you have a STEM club or perhaps a nearby university where you could ask for an internship?

Thank you! There are not many ECs relevant in my area besides volunteering at St. Francis Hospital. My main worry is that my course load lacks the “standard” rigor. However, I can honestly say I am very challenged with my course load. Do you think they will factor in the course limitations of a mid-year sophomore high school transfer?

If you don’t have enough rigorous classes available at your school, or circumstances beyond your control have prevented you, they definitely won’t hold it against you.
If you are taking the most rigorous classes available to you, they will notice and take that into account.
Taking 6/6 available AP classes looks much better than someone at another school who is taking 6/20 available AP classes, in my opinion.

Bumpp bump bumpp

Thank you for chancing me! I’m kinda new around here so I’m not very good at this yet but I’ll try my best :). I’m not very familiar with the colleges you listed so I might not be much help but from what you listed I think your dedication to music and volunteering will be great for admissions. If your school doesn’t offer the standard of rigor that other schools offer then it probably won’t hurt you. Are you thinking about pursuing music at all in college or submitting an arts supplement?

Retake your SAT. If you get a 2150 (only a 100 point increase), you should be able to get into GW, BC, and NYU. Specifically, I would suggest trying for a 2150+ and applying EA to BC.

thank you! I’m retaking them in may

Thanks for responding to my thread,
Georgetown reach
BC high match
GW match
NYU low reach
Notre Dame high match

I’m not super familiar with schools up north because I’m from North Carolina, but given that they’re major state universities, they’re probably competitive. Your schedule is pretty challenging and colleges like that. You’re taking APs which is good. The quantity isn’t always super important. A lot of schools just want to see that you tried and took a few. You have good ECs. They’re very diverse and volunteer hours look good. I’d say keep up the good grades and keep volunteering and being involved in your school. Being a minority is a good hook. Make sure you SAT scores are awesome and write good essays and definitely try to get a leadership position in one of your clubs!

I actually didn’t read closely enough. Your volunteer hours are really good! And your orchestra involvement along with sports really diversifies you. I honestly think you should get into at least one of your choices especially if you’re in state

Thanks for replying to mine! Assuming you retake the SATs and improve by about 50-100 points overall-
Georgetown: reach, but with good SATs definitely attainable
GW: match
BC: match
NYU: depends which of their programs you’re applying to, but I’d say a low reach or a match
Notre Dame: low reach or a match

Thanks for chancing my post!

Let’s see, I’m a little more familiar with certain schools on your list than others. Your SAT’s so far look okay, and if you bring each up, even just by a little, specifically your math and critical reading, then those are pretty solid. Also, SAT II’s could help you stand out, so good luck on those! Your extracurriculars look really involved and varied, so just stay participating in them. I don’t know if you just didn’t mention it, but in the EC’s you should really demonstrate some leadership positions… that’s really imprtant. I would focus most on taking the best courseload you can senior year and excelling in your classes, as you have been previously. (Especially do well in AP Bio if thats what you’re interested in). Don’t be afraid to be penalized for your transfering situation; you can explain it and schools will see that you took all that you could.

Sidenote, since you’re still a junior and have time to take tests, I would recommend taking the ACT. Not that your SATs are low, but you never know how much better you could do on the ACT, and it could end up being just another asset to your application. For me, my SAT was solid, but taking the ACT I think has helped save my chances at several schools I wanted to get into. But it’s up to you! :)

I’d say BC and GW are pretty good matches.
In order of easiest to get into to hardest, it would then be NYU, Georgetown, Notre Dame. (Not that they’re easy). Those would be increasing reaches, but still attainable. You have plenty of time to prove yourself. You’re already doing great! Good luck!

Most of them are matches. I would recommend taking Economics over Marine Bio.

First off, thank you for chancing my thread!

Now, as for you: I do not know a lot about these schools except for Boston College because I live in the area, but I would say that all these universities are within your reach. Make sure you retake the SAT and try to get a 2200+, which may improve your chances by a bit. Also, do not worry about not taking 20+ AP classes if they were not made available to you. As Subterranean said, someone who has taken 6/6 APs offered looks better than someone who has taken 6/20. Also, try to sign up for some summer Community College classes. These will make up for the APs that you are lacking and could also be applicable for college credits. If you want to follow a career course in biology, try getting an research internship at a local lab as well during the summer. Not only will colleges see that you are actively pursuing your passion, but this will also get you a head start on your future biology career. Lastly, make sure you get great recommendations and write a terrific essay! Best of luck to you!

might also look at Holy Cross-similar to ND and Georgetown.

I would say matches for most of them.

Out of curiosity, were your parents in China Catholic or are your current parents Catholic?
