Does anyone know some details about the social life at Georgetown? Study hard, party hard(er)? Or mostly just hitting the books? Are social groups determined by dorm or club involvement (since there are no frats)? Thanks!
A bit of an urban legend has developed about social fraternities at Georgetown. The university does not officially recognize them. Yet they exist and often thrive on campus. They do not dominate campus social life. But they enhance it with parties, charitable activities, etc.
Georgetown has rigorous academics and ample opportunities to have fun. So, students can establish a good balance between studying hard and partying hard. As I’m sure you can imagine, partying harder than you study is generally not a good idea.
Study hard, party (a little less) hard. That’s how I do it at least, but there are definitely people who party harder, and people who don’t party at all. You can find a party most weekends through a club or one of the unsanctioned frats mentioned above (they exist but by no means make up a large part of campus social life). With regards to drinking, the university is generally hands off unless a party has gotten unreasonably loud or annoying to other students. You’re welcome to drink if you want, but if you don’t want to, no one will really know or care.
If you really don’t like parties, there are alternatives, like GPB’s weekly movie screenings or excursions downtown. There’s something for everyone!
