I will be attending the medical institute at Georgetown, and I was wondering if anyone else on CC will be going to a Georgetown program this summer (institute, fundamentals, summer honors, or any other program), or if anyone has gone before and has any advice for the summer.
Hi!!! I studied american politics last summer at georgetown and it honestly was one of the best experiences of my life. I was sooo unbelievably tired but it was SO worth it. Go to M street every chance you get! I still talk to my friends from camp. You’ll love it. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask me!!!
Hey Lbelle, I am taking the Fundamentals of Business this summer on session ii, by the way, is there any Facebook group or such of the people going to session ii?
@Meghanclaire18 OMG I have so many questions!
Did you interact mostly with students from your own program, or did you talk to people from other programs too? If you talked to anyone in the medical institute, do you know what kind of things they did (the website has videos from a few years ago so idk if the curriculum is still the same)? How much free time did you have? Were there many rising sophomores there? From what I can tell it’s mostly juniors and seniors, so I’m kind of nervous about that social aspect of it (I’m going into tenth grade). And lastly, do you have any tips for the summer/anything you wish you had known going into the program?
@iEatzChicken I haven’t found one, sorry.
My kid was a rising junior…attended the International Relations program…she had the time of her life…the kids she met there are still her friends online. A terrific program.
There were definitely more rising sophomores participating in the medical institute than mine. We honestly didn’t get much free time, and I was so tired some days that I’d skip lunch and go back to my room to nap for an hour. I talked to mostly kids in my institute, but a bunch of girls in my dorm were from the medical one as well! They all seemed to have a TON of fun. Honestly what I wish I knew was how short the camp would feel. My first two days I didn’t have any friends really outside of my roommate, but once I found some friends I clicked with them actually had a TON of fun. Make a really big effort to make friends early. Me and my friends did so many fun things- our last night we jumped into the fountain outside the chapel after getting some frozen yogurt. I loved that camp and wish I could do it all over again. Just prepare yourself to be a little tired!
@Meghanclaire18 Thank you so much for answering my questions! One more question - did you find that there was a lot of emphasis on religion for the summer programs? I know that Georgetown is a Jesuit university, but I was wondering how much you actually felt that as a high schooler on the campus.
Hi Lbelle, i spent last summer at Georgetown and there was no emphasis on religion at all. Granted, it is a jesuit school but the summer programs/campus does not pressure anyone to participate in anything. the academic atmosphere is very rigorous but the social atmosphere is very relaxed. however, if you want to go to church/participate in religious activities you would definitely have the opportunity to.
Absolutely no emphasis on religion whatsoever (and i come from an all girls private catholic school so i would have definitely picked up on it)
@JungleJim4232 and @Meghanclaire18 thank you so much! I’m very relieved about that because I’m Jewish so I was worried that religion would be forced upon students. My institute starts Sunday, and idk if you will see this in time but if so I have one other last minute question. What is the standard dress? The website said informal but school appropriate, so would shorts and a tank top be okay or would I need to cover my shoulders and/or knees (I go to a Jewish school and we have a strict dress code so I never really know what would normally be allowed).
Dress code is very casual. Shorts and tanks are fine. Sneakers flip flops tshirts even pajamas are fine. Have fun at Georgetown
