Hi all- I am attending an institute at Georgetown this year and I have a few questions.
How many people are in each institute? I don’t really know what to expect. I’ve seen pictures with a lot of kids but I don’t know.
How’s the food? I know we are dining at Leo’s.
Do you get to go out on your own to the Georgetown Neighborhood at all, or do you just go out with your program? Ex- can you go to M street with your roommate or do you just go w the whole program.
If anyone can answer these, it would be a huge help
I went to the medical institute a few years ago!
There were over a hundred students in my institute, but we were divided into smaller sections for most things (two buses for trips and then a bunch of groups for sessions with TAs).
The food was fine, nothing special but nothing bad.
You can go into the neighborhood I think any night/afternoon you want. I’m pretty sure you can’t go alone but you totally can with a roommate or something.
I hope you have a great time!
@Lbelle43 thank you so much!! I have a few more questions if you’re willing to answer them.
How many people were per floor? I saw on a few others there were 9-10, but just curious.
How are the dorms?
How are the kids there? Are they all pretty friendly? I am not the most outgoing around people I don’t know very well. Once I get to know people though, I’m really friendly. Is everyone pretty outgoing?
Finally, what was the best/worst part of the institute? I’m doing international Relations but just wondering since they’re all at the same place.
Thank you so much for being willing to answer questions -> it’s so helpful!!
@Lbelle43 sorry another question… are there a lot of rising sophomores? I’m a rising sophmore and I’m nervous I’m going to be like the youngest one lol
I have no recollection of how many people were on my floor but it was most of the girls from my institute so a fair amount for sure.
The dorms were fine, not nice but not atrocious (and mine was air conditioned which was great). Bathrooms were clean enough.
The kids were probably friendly but tbh I’m an introvert and struggle to make friends in such short periods of time. But by the end I had found a small group I was comfortable with. I think this really depends on who you are as a person and who else you meet. I recommend making an effort to eat with different people for the first few meals and just kind of get to know a bunch of people at first.
The best part of the institute was probably one of the labs we did (I can’t pick just one!). The activities and lectures were all pretty well planned, so the academic side of things were overall really great! The worst part for me was the roommate situation… my roommate and I didn’t get along too well (didn’t hate each other just didn’t click), but that’s just kind of luck. But I will say that I spent almost every night chatting with the RAs cause I didn’t want to go to my room, and they were soooooo great!!!
And most people were rising juniors but there was a significant sophomore presence (including myself haha). There wasn’t really a distinction between ages.
I’m glad I could help! Let me know if you have any more questions; I hope you have a great summer!
@Lbelle43 sorry! I promise this is the last question!!
Were most people from far away or from the DC/DC metro area? I’m from Ohio about 6 hours away from Georgetown.
Haha that’s okay, I don’t mind questions!
I think a lot of people were from the D.C. area (I’d say mostly east coast) but there was a mix. Also, there was a pretty strong international presence - I had one friend from Russia!
@Lbelle43 Haha thanks so much!! I actually have like 2 more questions but they’re pretty simple! Sometimes I wish the website/welcome packet told you more!!
When does your professor contact you? They mentioned something about how they’ll email you or something before the institute.
Do have any info on your roommate before you get there? Like do you learn their name/phone number or anything?
Hey, I’m also attending a Georgetown summer institute… which institute are you attending?
@spyglerik12 I’m doing International Relations what about you
Georgetown’s summer program is a disorganized mess. They have all sorts of 20-year-old kids enforcing rules and policies without really knowing what the rules are or who is in charge.
My daughter is signed up for both sessions, but they are kicking her out of the dorms for the weekend between. That is annoying, but we could have planned for it if they hadn’t told us in May that she could keep her room for the weekend since she needed to start classes again on Monday.
9am on Friday morning I find out they are making her move all her stuff to some classroom and run around campus doing check-out things while she should be studying for her final exam that was happening at 1:00. THEN they made her move it all again to the student center – basically, hours and hours of hassle and phone calls and everyone giving her and us different information all morning, completely preventing her from studying for her exam.
There are other programs that are better run than this. Can you imagine Duke, for example, being such a mess? No, because Duke is run competently. Georgetown is not.
Plus the dorms are infested with rats.
@Vanyali what program did your daughter do?
