Hey all,

Have any of you (the current Georgetown SFS students and incoming freshmen) heard of the Georgetown SFS campus in Qatar which just started last year? This year when I was a Senior, I attended their first MUN conference which was by far the best MUN conference I have ever been to. The conference was hosted by Georgetown SFS students from the DC campus who helped organized and were the chairs in the conference. I will be attending Georgetown this fall and was thinking of transferring to the SFS campus in Doha for a semester or so since I'm an Arab myself. Have any of you heard of the SFS campus in Doha? It seems like not many people know that the campus exists. I wanted to know from you guys what you have heard about the campus over there and if any of you have transferred there, what was the experiance like? Your replies would be greatly appreciated.

Umm, pretty much everyone at Georgetown knows about SFS-Q... So I wouldn't really say that no one has heard of it.

Anyway, I'm not sure if you're allowed to just "transfer" there for a semester. The operation over there is fairly limited, and as far as I know you cannot study abroad there (yet, at least).

I was part of the original SFS-DC delegation that went to SFS-Q to help with GQMUNC (Georgetown University in Qatar Model United Nations Conference), long title, I know. Hands down the greatest experience of my freshman year (and I get to go back in December)!

When we met with admissions officers at SFS-Q they stated that they were working towards a "studying abroad" opportunity at SFS-Q, allowing main campus students to study in Doha and vice versa. Having met and spoken to the SFS-Qers, I know that this would be very popular; after their visit to DC most expressed that they would like to spend a semester to a year here in DC.

With that said, considering that SFS-Q is still building (they just broke ground on the "Doha Healy") and this year marks the acceptance of their second class, time will tell whether this becomes a reality. The kinks would need to be worked, certainly, but I know the administrators here and there are working on it.

Thanks for your inputs so far.

Streetcornertalking: Since you have been at the SFS-Q campus, I would like to ask you a few questions. Are all the same people who helped with the MUN conference last automatically picked to go again? Are there going to be the same chairs? were you a chair? I am assuming you were not since you did not mention it. I really want to visit the campus over there again, but are certain people picked to go? Or can you choose to volunteer if you want to? When is the next MUN conference over there scheduled? I heard they changed the date to sometime in January since SFS students complained that it was during their spring break right before their finals.

Thank you for your help.

The group of 8 of us that staffed GQMUNC were all invited to go back to Doha based on the positive experience at the inaguraul conference. Since part of the group were seniors, and others have scheduling conflicts, I believe only a handful of us will actually return to Doha (including myself). Preconference I assisted with many of the logistical challenges and spent a significant time touring the city, but during the conference I was chairing SPD, 4th.

From what I have heard, there will be an application process (like there was for the first round) beggining in September, followed by interviews and then selectees decided late october/november. I am not quite sure how big of a group the administrators are aiming for this year.

The grapevine indicates that the conference has indeed been moved earlier in the year, most likely the week following New Years, probably cutting into our own winter vacations.

streecornertalking,

A friend of mine was in SPD, so he'd probably remember you. I was in the RSC though.

What kind of questions did they ask you in the interview besides perhaps MUN experiance? How long was it? Did you have to write an essay or anything like that? What's the average number of chairs in a committee? I know the RSC only had one chair and one co-chair, who was an sfs-q student. The other committees as I recall seemed to have more chairs (especially in human rights- that committee was huge.)

I know I've been bombarding you with questions, but I really appreciate your help. Thanks!
