Georgetown SFS vs UVA

So I was accepted into both schools. I really really like the SFS curriculum and GTown in general, but the steep 60,000$ a year is kind of making me want to reconsider a state school.

I guess my question is whether or not the value of Georgetown's specialty would justify the ridiculous amount of money I (or my parents) would have to pay over UVA. Also, if it's worth noting, I got the Echols scholarship at UVA too.

Anyone with experience at one/both of these schools want to give any advice?

Bump…

Georgetown SFS is literally one of a handful of schools where one can say it is literally “priceless” to attend if given the opportunity. By this I mean, you can’t put a price tag on having class with a former or future Cabinet Member or Head of State or Agency Head. Whether you ever have a job or a career of any kind, the kind of opportunity that SFS will give you is one that cannot be considered in dollar terms alone.

Ask someone who graduated from SFS in the last 5 years, if it was worth paying tuition to have had class with Michael Oren or Chuck Hagel or George Tenet or Madeleine Albright or two dozen more names you would instantly recognize.

Is this a serious question? Go to UVA-its Foreign Affairs program is awesome too. This is an absolute no-brainer for UVA even if your parents are millionaires. D.C. is chocked full of Wahoo alums. You will have no trouble getting a job with the State Department or at Brookings with a UVA degree.

Georgetown SFS is at the epicenter of power in the world today. The White House Chief of Staff in an alumnus, the soon to be Secretary of Defense is a recent faculty member while the Majority Whip of the US Senate comes from the class of 1966 . The US President from 1993 to 2001 graduated from the class of 1968 along with the long term President of the Philippines. Something like four or five other Heads of State of UN recognized nations have served in the 2000s. Israel’s Ambassador to the US taught there as did the current President of the European Commission, etc., etc., etc.

Going to SFS is like going to Julliard in the arts or Cal Tech in the sciences or the Ecole National de Administration in French politics or Yale in Law or Columbia in Journalism or Harvard in Business. It is simply the pinnacle for anyone who wants to do anything serious in diplomacy or intelligence or major NGOs or the top public policy shops.

If you live in Virginia, then go to UVa. If it’s paying 60k a year at Georgetown vs. much less $ + scholarship at UVa, then definitely go to UVa.

I mean sure the SFS school at Georgetown is great, but if you can get a great education at UVa (it’s a really good school anyways) then why pay so much more money?

And sure there are really good alumni at Georgetown…White house chief of staff…presidents…etc. but you shouldn’t choose a school based on that. It’s not like you’re choosing a school by banking on becoming a cabinet member or a future president. Just get the best education paired with the best price tag and you’ll do great. :)

Vienna man, just out of curiosity, did you go to SFS?

Yes and Columbia Business School where I was an International Fellow in SIPA as well.

We are having a similar option but with Northwestern. The more I research, the more I come to realize that SFS might be to good an opportunity to pass up.
