UVA vs. Georgetown

For Political Science/History/Economics/Pre-Law

Oh, can I also ask how Virginia is in regards to its undergraduate International Relations' programme?

georgetown isn't worth it unless you're going to sfs, honestly. even so, uva is a better value all around, especially instate obviously. virginia has a great prelaw, poli sci, and econ program (just look at how many people in DC are from uva) and is definitely one of the most prestigious and best in the country. georgetown sfs is another great program as well, but the only reason i'd say to pick gtown over uva is if you absolutely love dc. if you just want to be close to dc for connections, uva is still a better option because it's still very close to dc. unless you really love dc or the school gtown itself, i'd say go with uva.

and uva's IR program is kick @$$ as well.

Thanks. I knew UVA Law was one of the best for International Law, but I was curious about the undergrad programme and thnks for the help. Now, I'll have excuse to investigate it more.

i honestly think as a college experience, you'll probably like uva more. not to mention the campus is probably THE most beautiful in the entire country.

if you're a rankings wh0re like me, you'll also notice that most years UVa is ranked higher than georgetown overall (although this past year they were ranked the same).

if you aren't in sfs for undergrad (for international relations etc), then you should pick uva. it's a better education for basically every prelaw major and a better value. visit both, see which one you like more. you honestly can't go wrong with either so pick on which you feel more at home.

dearkonstantine:
Please tell me why you think UVa is great for IR? My d is visiting tomorrow (for the 2d time) from NY to evaluate UVa relative to cornell and tufts her other IR choices. (waitlist G'town) Yes, it is a stunning campus and good value even for OOS, so we're looking for fine distinctions. What year are you and what is your major? What do you like most/least about UVa? Thanks in advance.

haha i'm not a student there yet but my intended major is most likely business, sociology, IR, poli sci, something like that

the IR program at uva is just great i mean there's no other way to put it. it's one of the big reasons i ultimately chose uva. the proximity to dc also helps. my friend who's going to gtown sfs this fall said if he had one other school he'd go to for his IR education, it would be uva.

what school is your daughter in at cornell? i was waitlisted at ILR.

d is technically a communications major in CALS, intends to combine with government major, IR concentration, to get where she wants to be. She was WL at G'town SFS, so I'm interested in your friend's view that UVa is a good backup. So you still have not explained why you think UVa is so great for IR? D's other option is Tufts, but it costs way more than either UVA or Cornell, for her. Are you in NY, too? Are you going to Days on the Lawn? We leave tomorrow am for Monday's session.

haha i'm from florida and i can't go to days on the lawn beacuse my tennis team has districts and stuff. honestly, all schools are great and i don't think it would be that much of a help to see which one has just about the best IR degree. since she's not going to major in IR in cornell, she should probably not go there. i think honestly, when you have schools that are so close in academics as those 3, you really need to just pick on your gut instinct and which one you really love the best and see yourself at the most.

instate - go to uva

out of state - georgetown

That's not necessarily true. Even if money is not a factor, they are both comparable in terms of IR and their political science programs.

I think it all comes down to where you feel the most comfortable. I'm oos and interested in IR, and I chose UVa; sure because of the academics, but also because I liked the area.
