Which is a better school for premed? Take into account difficulty, individual attention, getting all the classes I would need, advising. I will be transferring there as a Sophomore and want to know which would be better.

The “best school” for pre-med is the one at which you are most able to achieve a 4.0. UVa has a very competative pre-med program and unless you are up to that level of competition you might be better off elsewhere.

haha Im actually choosing between Georgetown and UVA if anything UVA would be the easier one

alexj777, Georgetown is unquestionably an excellent school as is UVa; however, if I’m not mistaken, Georgetown’s strengths rest in their humanities programs geared toward pre-law not pre-med. When people think Georgetown they think future politicians and lawyers (at least in the region I live). I agree with 3rings, though, and think that if you’re planning on going to med school, it’s all about attending the most prestigious school WHERE YOU CAN GET THE HIGHEST GPA. My daughter will be attending UVa this fall and opted for it over Northwestern which is renowned for pre-med; however, they, like others, are also known for grade deflation. Consequently, she decided UVa would be more suitable for her career aspirations. Furthermore, she felt she wanted to have the “whole college experience” as she puts it where she isn’t locked in her room for the next four years studying all the time just to keep up with the pack. She’s looking forward to the strong academics UVa offers coupled with the social experience other schools she got into lack. She never considered Georgetown because a) They’re not known for their science program and b) She would never want to live in DC. Again, this is just my 2 cents. I believe college is what you make it, and I feel you can receive a fabulous education at either.

Let us know how it works out in 4 years. Being in the Medical Education field and having some insight in to this, I am certain that you will find UVa far more competative than Georgetown.

I find it very hard to believe that UVA is that much more competitive than Georgetown. First off Georgetown has a 10% acceptance rate for transfer students and an 18% acceptance rate for freshmen admissions. UVA has a 37% acceptance rate for freshmen and a 37% acceptance rate for transfer as well. Georgetown also has an “early assurance program” where at the end of your sophomore year if your grades are good enough you can apply to Georgetown Medical School and not have to take the MCAT. Georgetown also has NIH headquarters a short distance away in Bethesda. I agree that UVA is a great school but I feel that both of you have strong bias and almost confirm the typical UVA arrogance.

alex, I have to agree with the previous two posters. This comes from a person who (still) desperately wanted to attend Georgetown SFS, got in, but then couldn’t afford it. I also considered UVa but decided not to May 1st. Georgetown’s strengths lie in its humanities programs. The SAT stats for the Nursing School is on average 60 points lower than the College or SFS. My dad works at the Medical Center at UVA, used to at Hopkins, and has friends of various specializations at hospitals around the country. GU is not respected among his peers for its med program. When he discussed my choice of GU, most of his friends went “blehh” cause they thought of its reputation in medicine. UVa, however, is very well respected.

There’s your answer right there if you feel that way. Both schools are very selective (Gtown more, IMO) and both schools have excellent pre-med resources with their nearby hospitals, wide array of classes, and dominant in many fields. Both schools, assuming you did well GPA/MCAT/etc, would put you in the running for top med schools. I would say pick which school feels better to you. But if you think UVa is arrogant, then maybe you should avoid coming here. You asked a UVA board about their school and they responded, with typical pride and knowing we have one of the top Med Schools in the country.

Georgetown has tons of meaningless master degrees (including many at the med school) advertised everywhere from the Metro Express to huge poster boards around DC, not to be mean, but in DC it is known as a degree mill. Oh, sorry for my ~UVA arrogance~

http://som.georgetown.edu/prospectivestudents/degrees/graduate/

My favorite one is this one: http://smp.georgetown.edu/ called “The Special Master’s Program (The SMP)” tailored to college graduates who wish to strengthen their credentials for application to U.S. medical schools. The Georgetown Special Master’s Program is the first and longest running program its kind.

LAWL

If you got 60k to spare, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to buy yourself a Gtown diploma.

Georgetown Med students choose between GU and the Carribean. It is a bottom Tier Medical Center as a result of limited federal fundinga and an inability to retain faculty.

its rated top 50 med schools in the nation by US news and world report

USNWR Med School Rankings:

UVA #25
Georgetown #42

I personally feel rankings are overrated. (My D chose the #24 undergraduate school over the #12 because she felt she’d be happier at UVa.) There’s an undertone in your posts that indicates you want to attend Georgetown; go with your gut. Again, both are great schools.

jc40, completely agree with both points.

Rankings ARE overrated especially when it comes to top 20 ish schools be cause the differences are academic are intangible.

And, it does seem like you are rooting for GU. What’s holding you back?

my undertone in my posts isn’t so much meant to be rooting for Georgetown its more so completely disagreeing with 3rings posts. The fact that 3rings thinks Georgetown is a bottom tier Medical school comparable to med school in the Caribbean is ludicrous. And I do agree that rankings don’t mean that much. I just posted here to get an idea of what premed at UVA was like and I get a response basically saying its too hard and you cant do it. Also instead of hearing about what UVA was like alot of what I’m getting is how bad Georgetown is when I don’t think its bad at all.

What was said was that GU is the option they choose rather than heading to the Carribean. GU Med school is a group of students who either are legacies ( and thus don’t know better) or are out of options.

Both schools are great. Great Profs…You’ll have no problem getting the classes you wish, i.e.>pre-reqs., both schools are very competitive in the undergraduate world, equally so IMHO. UVA just got a new pre-health advisor. She seems very bright, and knows what she is doing. She’s even questioned some of my friends in terms of saying >>they weren’t ready to apply to med schools, and she was correct. That takes good guts as a new-comer to the any University! Excellent first impression action! It’s important to have someone in the know, to critique one’s whole CV.
So great education, great individual attention, UVA will be great, but so will G-town. Go with the flow.

Certainly consider the option of staying at Tech where you would be better off with a 4.0 than a 3.2 from UVa when it comes time to apply.

Thanks powderpuff very helpful. 3rings get over yourself

I think an important question that hasn’t been asked is, have you gotten into one or both of these great universities?

both of them
