Georgetown v Northeastern

I was accepted Early Action to Georgetown's School of Foreign Service as well as to the Honors Progam at Northeastern University.

I want to go into public policy, obviously making GTown my top choice, but....I have Trustee Scholarship (full ride) to Northeastern in Boston.

Go broke over a Georgetown education or take a full ride from Northeastern?

This is a tough one. In the end though, if you’re going to be saddled with a huge debt load upon graduation, that may turn your Georgetown dream into a nightmare.

How much debt are you looking at taking on if you become a Hoya?

can u get any financial aid from GTown? If you can, go with that.
If not, it is NOT worth $200k to go to Georgetown and in return, turn down a full ride. Maybe Georgetown for grad school? That’s a better investment.

Georgetown is a full need school so it is likely that you would get a package that would pare the difference in cost. In the unlikely event that you are truly looking at free ride versus full cost, I think that Georgetown SFS is literally among a true handful of institutions where the cost of taking on a debt load is worth it. You simply cannot put a price tag on being able to enroll in class with and gain the kind of connections and exposure that come with having class with former Heads of State(Poland, Spain), Cabinet Officers and National Security Advisors(Albright, Tenet, Lake), UN Ambasadors (McHenry) and Senators (Hagel) as well as political shakers(Brazile). SFS is literally one of maybe four or five places where you really do have to say, the four years is worth the price.

I think it depends on how much debt you’d go into at Georgetown, and how well you think you’ll be prepared to pay off that debt after graduation.

I’m an NU student and think it’s a good school, but I think georgetown’s program would be much stronger. I’d say georgetown, unless the debt is really massive… a ton of undergrad debt would be tough, especially if you wanted to go to grad school after.

I’ve seen people get really awesome opportunities here, especially through co-op, and I have friends on trustee who chose NU over some higher ranked schools (Dartmouth, Tufts, GWU…), they all seem to be very happy. Still, if georgetown is your top choice, it might be worth it, just make sure you really weigh how much it will actually cost to choose georgetown over NU-- and keep in mind that living in boston is outrageously expensive.

You could go to NU for your undergraduate and GTown for your master’s. That’s a reasonable compromise.

I would go to Georgetown if there is any possible way to afford it. Its going to be that much better.

Thank you for all the great feed back.

As of now, it does not look like I will be eligible for any financial aid except for a few grand in federal loans…

I honestly think that it may be worth the debt to go to Georgetown. While getting a full ride anywhere is commendable, you shouldn’t let your financial situation govern where you go to school, especially of GT is the school of your dreams. As someone who was accepted to such a prestigious program, you are obviously someone who puts the future in mind. But this one time it might be worth it to live in the moment and worry about the hard stuff later.
