The legislature passed and the Governor signed a budget that repeals the Governor's Scholarship funding. This is the money that goes to valedictorians and STAR students who attend Georgia colleges/universities.

This means that these students will lose $900 a year.

It was a nice thing to do before we had HOPE. Should have been repealed earlier. Finally did it now that people are getting fired to save budget money.

I know it seems unfortunate, but as the father of two STAR students I must admit it always struck me as a little excessive. The top one or two students are always good candidates for outside scholarships, and can rack up tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars when their private scholarship applications keep coming out on top. The #10 student in the class may not be able to get any awards or scholarships.

I personally know of at least three kids who will be hurt substantially by this and they are half way through school. HOPE doesn’t help with room/board and daily living expenses. Those kids didn’t get tens and hundreds of thousands in outside private scholarships. They go to school and work.

I guess they will just have to borrow even more money against their futures.

For those of you who don’t need the scholarship money, I hope your kids realize how blessed they are to be smart and financially secure. I wish them continued success in their lives.
