***Georgia Tech Class of 2020 EA Applicant Thread***

5,273 admitted EA last year-

Applications for the Early Action admission period totaled 11,702, a slight decrease from last year, yet more were admitted and the class has a higher academic profile. Nearly all of the students — 97 percent — have taken AP calculus or a higher level of math. They average 1488 on the SAT (2146 with its writing component) and 32 on the ACT, and have taken an average of 10 college level classes before even finishing high school.

Do they defer applicants to the RD pool?

Yes they do

Are u sure they defer? I thought they wait list RD applicants

2 more weeks!!!

“Nearly all of the students — 97 percent — have taken AP calculus or a higher level of math.”

This means that the students (back in January) were taking OR had already taken AP calc, right?

The writing makes it sound like 97% had already taken AP calc (as in, they took BC their junior, sophomore, or freshman years). I thought it was pretty normal to take BC senior year.

@glasshours it means they have taken AB. So u could be taking BC right now to fit in that description. Most schools in Georgia only have bc calc, where ab is taught the first semester-so many students here have ab and BC completed as of senior year. (means that they completed ab and BC in junior year) . Some are now taking either IB math HL or linear algebra thru a secondary institute.

Most students in Georgia completed BC junior year (some sophomore year)

Thats why the percentage is so high because most applicants come from GA.

Oh god
I’m taking BC right now, as a senior…over here in New York, we take an honors/pre-AP calculus junior year.

Hahah, @glasshours thats fine! As long as you have one part of calc finished, you should be good!!

Did everyone get a letter from GA Tech about a week ago wishing you a Happy Holiday, etc., and asking you to withdraw your application if you’ve made a commitment to another school?

Yup

Hey everyone, that article about 97% of applicants taking Calculus or higher is from January of 2015, and about the class of 2019, not us. This does not mean that 97% of people applying this year had taken AB Calc by their junior year, so don’t sweat it.

@Hermit9 , that stat was posted upon someone’s request for last years early admission breakdown.

@Xboxgamergirl I know. My post was in response to your and glasshours’ claim that that meant 97% admitted took calculus by their junior year. It does not, it means that 97% will have taken it by the end of their senior year.

@Hermit9 oh okay, well then in that case let me clarify my post: I did not mean to say that 97% took it for this year. Last year, 97% of students had taken or were taking AP calculus AB. I was just clarifying that it did not mean that BC was completed. And i also added that the “have taken” is probably due to the way the calculus classes in some of the Georgia schools are set up, where AB and BC are taught the same year.

I apologize for the confusion.

@Xboxgamergirl No need to apologize, I was just trying to clarify without sounding like a cotton-headed ninnymuggins.

Knowing CCers, if some saw people on here saying 97% had taken/were taking BC, they’d probably lose their…

@mom2ljr Actually I think it was two emails, one was Happy Holidays and hope to see you on campus, and the other was the newsletter which had the link to withdraw, which was sent three days before the happy holidays. At least that’s what I got… Did your happy holidays not say “hope to see you on campus in 2016”?

@Hermit9 - Wait, so it means that 97% will have completed AP calc by graduation? I’m in BC right now, and the fact that 97% of last year’s applicants had already completed BC (or AB) made me panic. But I suppose that’s why I’m on CC. :stuck_out_tongue:

Is it possible for someone to get accepted to this school if they are in the top 11% in their class? Every other aspect is fine, ACT, ECs, Rec. letters, etc. And also great essays?
