Georgia Tech Class of 2023 EA Thread

They said they give less than 40 provost…so that is good!

Son accepted for electrical engineering. OOS, 34 ACT, 3.99 UW GPA, many ec activities. Great option and very interested, but very expensive OOS especially since we have 2 in college and already put 2 through incl one law school. Waiting to hear about scholarships… Very excited about admission.

@TXMomX4 The way we made GT affordable was as follows:

  1. Doing study abroad especially programs like the ones in China where you pay in-state tuition instead of OOS tuition.
  2. Co-ops and internship earnings. DD contributed 70% of her earnings from each co-op/internship (ranged from $7K to $12K each term) which really helped. DD got lucky with her internships/co-ops because they paid for housing and travel which really allowed her to save her earnings.
  3. When DD’s earnings got to be at least 51% of tuition cost, we stopped claiming her as a dependent which made her eligible for the education credit and other tax programs which increased her tax return.
  4. DD got at least $10K each year in merit scholarships from various organizations. She received small merit scholarships from GT (around $1K to $2K) which would be posted in her department’s newsletter which she would apply for. Some companies give GT monies to create scholarship programs like Fprd or Phillips 66… Each year my DD and I would do a ton of research and find STEM scholarships where financial aid was not a factor(we don’t qualify and despite saving all of DD’s life, did not have the whole amount covered). Every engineering organization, companies etc, you name it, she applied for it and got the scholarships. It helped that her freshman year at GT, she got really good grades and that she was active on campus including being on a competition team through the Student Competition Center. It was not difficult applying for the scholarships because she recycled essays and kept her resume updated. It just became the thing she worked on every Jan/Feb for two weeks. By her 4th year DD got $25K in scholarships because some organizations like the Society of Manufacturing Engineers would raise their amounts (such as $5K). Plus some companies like Atkins or Shell, use scholarships as recruitment tools for trying to get the student to come work for their company.

Hope this info helps!

I got deferred in EA :((. It was my first application ever and my essays were kinda cringey so I’m really worried. Does anyone know the acceptance rate for Computer engineering?

@americandreampls same! are you in state?

No, I’m an international

Got in oos cs

@itsv Thanks for all the info! My son is applying for every scholarship he can find. We’ll have to see if he is awarded anything. GT a great option for him but much pricier than UT -Austin where he was also admitted for electrical. Fingers crossed some scholarships come his way. I did co-op long ago thru Drexel University and agree it is a huge plus for the finances.

@TXMomX4. I hear you! You are lucky to have such a great in state option. My son loved UT! Our in state option is Ga Tech and will be very difficult to turn down. OOS is so expensive and most competitive state schools have very little merit.

Not sure if anyone’s still reading this post now but want to do things for cc for it helped me so much!

Result: Admitted
Major: honestly I don’t know which one I was admitted to. The letter didn’t mention this.
1st major: computational media
2nd major: computer engineering

International applicant
GP/Class Rank: my school does not provide this but basically straight As and 7s (for IB) with one B in 10th grade
SAT: 1550 (CR/750 M/800)
SAT Math II: 800
SAT Physics: 800
TOEFL: Reading 29 Listening 27 (highest 30, both provided) Writing 30 Speaking 29
single highest 115 super score 118

Essays: I thought it was very to the point but less “beautifully” written but turns out my “beautiful” one led me to be rejected by my ED1 school so guess beauty does not matter that much and the content counts more. Talked about discovering the beauty of machines and making it more visible to the ones outside of the STEM community, kind of like removing stereotypes.
Recommendations: I had especially good relationship with one of my teachers who teaches me in 2 (now 3 senior year) classes.
non legacy
Asian female
ECs: major ones are graphic design, robotics, class leadership roles, and badminton with competitions. My only link with computer is my graphic design lollll (or maybe a bit of CADs in robotics)

Hope this helps!
