Georgia Tech Class of 2023 EA Thread

Hey guys,

Haven’t seen one of these yet so decided I’d make one, feel free to take about anything on here - chancing, deadlines, acceptances, profiles, anything.

Hi guys! I’m applying EA, but I am eighty-percent certain I will get rejected.

I have 3.75 UW, 4.2 W gpa, with pretty poor test scores (30 ACT, 1370 SAT - I’m retaking this in October and expecting a 1420+). I am an OOS Asian female who is applying for the Computational Media major.

My extracurricular activities are quite strong; I have had multiple leadership positions in student government, debate, and National Honor Society. I have also one several national awards for my artwork and writing.

I was offered and took a competitive paid software development internship at a Fortune 100 company (one of the top ten software companies under Oracle and Microsoft; I won’t say which for privacy reasons).

Would you guys consider this a hook? If so, is it enough of a hook to make up for my sub-par stats? :frowning:

Hey there! I’m applying EA as an international student.
And hi @brokenjavascript I’m applying for computational media as well lol!

My school does not calculate GPA but I do IBDP and a few other subjects; so far they are all 7s and As, so guess 4.0 GPA (not really sure how this works). My standardized exams are pretty good, SAT 1550 (CR750+MATH800), maths II and physics 800 as well and a 115 TOEFL (super score 118). I am an Asian female from mainland China.

My extracurriculars are mainly around graphic design(digital and non-digital) and robotics, and won a few regional prizes. I also am the class monitor/president and has mainly leading/semi-leading roles in the school clubs. I also did some volunteering (those are pretty minor). This summer I went to the Engineering Summer Academy at Penn taking computer graphics courses and got an A (not sure if that helps but kinda related to computational media). Not from a very strong activity background, but pretty wide spread (other not much related ones are not mentioned )

I’m kinda worried if my EAs will drag me down, anyone got any opinions?

Your stats look great. Focus on your essay and I would say you have a great chance. However, GA Tech is getting more and more difficult to get in, especially for OOS students (it might be even harder for international students). Pick a couple safety schools if you want to study in US.

After applying, there was an email about activate account. once activated the account, what are the next steps?

it is not clear to me if the passport account is same as the account that is activated by email.

how to find out student’s gtid? is passport account and buzzport account needed at this time?

Just saw that GT applications are up by 12%. They expect ~20k EA applications.

Last year they accepted 8000.
2 years ago they accepted 7200.

This means that the acceptance rate will be in the ~18% to ~20% range overall.

~16% for OOS.

Typically 2800 to 3000 enroll. GT grows its enrollment by about 200 students per year.

@Greymeer Where did you read apps are up 12%?

Do the Stamps Scholarships or Provost Scholarships require a special Scholarship Application to be submitted? Do they require a FAFSA/CSS? Or do students just submit their Early Action application by the EA deadline and that is all?

@TXRunningMom there are no additional applications needed. All EA students are automatically applied.

@Greymeer , thank you so much! Do you know if those Scholarship recipients have to eventually fill out a FAFSA or CSS? (I know she is a long shot but I’m just ready to be done with all the applications and paperwork! I’ve done the FAFSA but GT is the only potential school that might require the CSS I think)

Recommendations
More likely 10/10-I’ve known this teacher for 4 years so I feel she will write me a good rec
I’m also an OOS student from Jersey City NJ and applied to GT early action. Is GT a school out of my reach? I really want to go here but being an OOS student, I feel like I’m not very qualified.

I’ll just add my son’s stats. GT is a reach school for him, just thinking it doesn’t hurt to try. Not counting on a yes.

1470 SAT (highest math 790)
4.001 weighted gpa, probably around 3.85-3.9 UW (weighting is a very slight boost per ap class, none for dual enrollment)
Stacked up on math such that he’s dual enrolled in calc 3 and will do diffeq in spring
5 ap/2 dual enrollment/1 honors class

Varsity tennis, varsity rowing, marching band, nhs, lots of volunteer work, paid employment
I really liked his service essay because he has unusual family responsibilities taking care of his severely disabled brother and also volunteers with SN kiddos

What is the estimate of the date that EA decisions will be released?

1/12/19

Does it affect chances of admission if Financial Aid forms are filled out? Is that viewed as “showing interest” or does GT admission know/care about what Financial Aid hoops students are doing?

OOS Applied EA but not having much hope.

SAT: 1430 (M 760, E 670)
UW GPA: 4
Gender: Female

I am wondering if I should send SAT Subject scores. Math2 780, Physics 690. Should I send just Math or both or none.
Suggestions please.
