Accepted with 4.0 UW, 4.8 W, 1580 GPA 35 ACT and a lot of ECs for Aerospace Engineering
International from Taiwan, currently on the waitlist for CS major. 4.0 GPA, 34 ACT, SAT II: 800 Math2, 800 Chemistry, 800 Physics, 107 TOEFL. Taiwan National Science Fair finalist with harmonization AI model.
How do Gtech and Carnegie Mellon compare for E/CE academically? I get the location and DI vs DIII, mostly trying to get info on courses and majors.
@AnyDad “class difficulty comparing”
GT is basically an engineering honors college. VT is an average state university. An honors student at VT is an average student at GT.
@AnyDad @Greymeer It’s hard to say how engineering colleges compare for difficulty. Most ABET accredited programs follow similar curriculum, but some schools may go into more depth or grade on a harder curve.
Georgia Tech is a challenging school and as Greymeer pointed out, Georgia Tech has better students, on average, than VT and most other state engineering schools, but that doesn’t mean Georgia Tech is necessarily “harder.” As the student body has improved at Tech, so have the average grades and generally students who put in the effort get As and Bs. You can browse grades by course here: https://critique.gatech.edu/
Tech professors generally don’t grade on a curve, unless it’s to curve up in favor of students, so if you earn a 90, you’re almost always going to get an A, even if that means 60+% of the class ends up with As. Some professors even tell students that an 85 will earn an A and others curve grades below a 90 up to an A at the end of the semester. I have only heard of one now retired professor that ever curved down, and that was because he had gotten into trouble for giving 80-90% of his students As in his calculus course, which was a result giving students “practice tests” that almost exactly matched the actual exams.
In an average intro or mid-level math, CS, or engineering course, the distribution may be 30-35% As, 30-35% Bs, 15-20% Cs, 5-10% Ds and generally <5% failing. These distributions usually become even more favorable in special topics and upper level courses, and in those it’s not particularly uncommon to see 50-75% As.
But note that the good grade distributions don’t mean Tech is easy. Tech has a very strong student body that works hard, and the grades tend to reflect that.
Been rather busy but here are results. DS rejected from GT, Asian American Male. Started own FTC team and writing all code for Mechanum and Tricycle drives posted in git (team won state scrimmage and was finals in states). 1540 SATs. 800 SAT Math 2 and Chem. 5s in AP Chem Calc AB and BC currently in AP CS and E&M and Physics Mech and multivar Calculus. President of Classics club (Latin and Greek Scholars). Played travel baseball for 6 yrs. Piano 4 yrs. Built a fully functional aluminum forge from discarded masonry bricks and propane tanks (quite the video) and did a ROS deployment with local university prof. Accepted UIUC ECE. Not looking back. Only forward.
Hey guys, if anyone could give me an idea of the cost of attendance for GT as an international I would really appreciate it.
Keep wondering why this thread is so slow. Anyone can tell me what’s it like to do engineering in GAtech? I heard it’s really stressful, is it true? How about grade deflation? Thanks in advance.
I have a child who graduated GT. The courses are difficult. Most students take 12 credit hours a semester and many go summer session as well. My child generally took more like 16-17. Its a very quantitative and advanced math dependent. Many intro classes will have a recitation class as well. Its not known for grade inflation. You definitely work. It was a learning curve as I would say my kid was an underachiver and studying was not required before hitting GT. GT challenged my child which is what they needed and later became a 4.0 student after floundering some with a C average. Fell in love with the school and the intellectual nature of the students. Its not a school that holds your hand but professors are accesible if you make the effort. Lots of tutoring available for students. My recommendation is to study their course offerings and see if it appeals to you. There is not much in the way of fluff courses. My child studied hard and had plenty of sleepless nights but also got to party and enjoy college. Got great job offers and definitely learned a lot.
Thank you! @scubadive I’m a little concern about the stress as my son has depression and anxiety issues. We’ve never visited the school so we’ll go visit and then let him decide.
my son just got offered admission from wait list but for start in summer semester. Anybody knows more about this option?
I am curious how students who live off campus commute to tech?
Admitted computer engineering, OOS male, 1530 SAT, UW GPA 3.86 (GPAs are highly school-dependent.)
Physics research at university, including published paper, robotics competition, mentored middle school maker club, not a star on a sports team
Lots of student housing is within walking distance.
Now in terms of the summer program, my eldest wished they had done it.
