Thanks. My D doesn’t have any CS activities outside HS. Her main interest is Speech and Debate. The ability to give a persuasive argument is good in any field. Seems a lot more girls are going into Engineering and Comp Sci nowadays.
She got a B in Calc AB and an A in Calc BC. Calculus BC was taken in junior year. She thought she might not remember much. I told her don’t worry. It is only 1 year ago, not 30 years ago!
Are you from NJ too? Looks like my daughter did exactly the same college thing as your son!!
Declined Purdue Engineering and UIUC because i’s too far from the coasts. NYU did not give her any scholarship so we thought didn’t make any sense to go somewhere that expensive. She committed to Rutgers Honors College for SOE with a good merit.
CMU seems closed for her too. Still waiting for GT but now chances seem lean !!!
@DS2021 - Yes, we are in NJ too! Good meeting with you in the virtual world. My son has committed to the honors academy for SOE (which I think is a little different than Honors College but same/similar classes). He is also waitlisted for UPenn & JHU.
We went on a self-guided tour of Rutgers and were happy with the campus (one reason my son declined NYU was because he wanted a regular campus rather than being in the city). They have really good restaurants around the area too.
All the best to your daughter!
Good meeting you too My daughter was keen on NYU for the city feel (LOL!) but Tandon as a school of engineering is not the greatest we felt. I think HC and Academy will have similar engineering classes but HC has some more inter-disciplinary classes/seminars and a separate dorm. Good luck on the WLs.
My daughter has one more waitlist at UMich but now she thinks if not GT, she would rather go to Rutgers HC!!
After seeing that Wisconsin has released everyone but in-state people from the waitlist and schools are starting to close waitlists for certain majors only, I wish more schools would do something like this particularly this year where there are very few spots and waitlists are enormous. If there is a category of students that will not be considered (whether by major, residency, or other criteria), I wish Georgia Tech would narrow their waitlist to reflect their known needs even if it means my in state son gets cut. Some schools have gone through their waitlist in such detail that they have kept only a selected number of kids and released everyone else. Others have required an active step (vs do nothing) to remain on the waitlist, whether it be continuing to opt in by clicking a link or by sending a short statement or update. That way you have the kids that are really still interested who take the extra step.
It is a real kindness to everyone who is out of the running. This interminable waiting is so hard. Saw a great rug for a great deal yesterday and almost bought it but it has a lot of red in it😂. I know that won’t fly if he happens to get into GT!! My current GeorgiaTech son has left his red and white golf shirt at home for the past two years!
My guess is that Georgia Tech is on target for the fall with the current admits - so keeping thousands of kids in the waitlist is likely unnecessary.
We are OOS, kid is planning to major in Electrical Engineering, graduating from top 100 high school w/ 1560 SAT (was able to get in once before pandemic!), 4.75 weighted/3.96 unweighted, 9 APS (Majority 5s). ECs were on par with most CC students: Robotics leadership positions, launched and run business for 4 years, numerous gifted learning opps, had two fellowships and an internship in lab (pre-pandemic). Kid wants to commit but dad wants to be sure that its the right move. The choice is between UIUC EE and GATech EE. Rankings are not everything and historically UIUC EE has been a global leader in the subject. For kid, its about the city vs. cornfield option. :
Congrats! Don’t know much about GT college town, but you cannot go wrong with UIUC - nice college town away from all city distractions. Also, as you said, historically UIUC is the EE leader (transistor inventors/noble laureates are from UIUC). Surrounded by cornfield is the only issue, but one doesn’t get to see that once inside the town.
