Waitlist Offer

Hi all Georgia Tech waitlisters!

I'm starting this thread to see who else is on the waitlist and also to hear from anyone who has information about the waitlist.

I've been hearing about numerous students who have turned down Tech (thank you for the slot and good luck at your other choice).

How many people do you think got the waitlist offer?

What are you doing as a backup?
A big problem I'm having is that we won't be notified before the deposit date for most other schools. I'm having to put down a deposit at my second choice and know that if I get into Tech, I'll loose $300+. It's well worth it in my opinion but the people paying the tuition (in my case parents) want me to give up on Tech because they don't want to loose money.

Are there any current Tech students who were accepted on the waitlist and have information about it (EG how you were notified and when)?

Good luck to all as we approach the "notification month"!!

I asked on the Georgia Tech Message Board - Admissions and a rep told me they had made 1200 offers. This is down from 1500 last year. They should know how many have accepted by now. I sent a folo up on this issue, but they haven’t posted a response.

Last year, the waitlist offers were 1509, acceptances of offer 621, admittances 258 – meaning there was a 41.5 percent chance of success for those who took Tech up on the waitlist offer.

There have been hints this year that there will be a slight advantage to being female, and from Georgia. (Tech said in-state applications were down three percent from last year but they planned to enroll the same number).

There were 14,210 applicants this year, and an admit rate of 47.5%, or 6750 admitted.
Last year: 13,495, applicants, 6976 admitted.

If Tech has a similar yield as last year, and depending on the way they count admits, I would guess that about 250-260 students would come off the waitlist. We are off in the world of WAG-ery here, but if a similar percentage of students accepted the waitlist offer as last year, a student’s chance of getting admitted off the waitlist might be as high as 50 percent.

Once you find out how many people accepted the waitlist offer, you’d have your key variable.
As for Georgia Tech’s yield, there are several unknowns. A large number of international applications, tuition and fee increases, decreased HOPE scholarship benefits, and financial aid variables (there have been a lot of complaints about the amounts offered).

I think all these factors suggest a higher chance of success off the weightlist. As for losing your deposit at another school, well, that’s the price of the ticket. It’s a minor cost, considering the stakes of a four-year education at the school you wish to attend, however.

@Malliford You sound like you belong at GATech
I saw that post! Thanks for asking, keep us posted about the number of acceptances.

As an in-state student and a “legacy” with a better GPA and SAT scores than some of the people who got accepted, I’m hopeful. The deposit at the other school is worth the risk. I’ll call it insurance. :D

Here is a link that shows how many freshman have deposited. I think it is updated every weekday. Looks like about 1950 deposits so far. Hope that is encouraging!

@jacketboy – your name says it all! If you get in, tell your parents you will reimburse their $300 from your first paycheck!

@mombbg – excellent data find! Looks like Tech has about 550 slots to fill for the freshman fall 2011 class in the next four days (five if Tech, like UGA, accepts deposits on Monday, May 2).

S is on Tech waitlist, but he’s happy to go where we plunked down deposit (Oxford/Emory), so it’s all good.

@mombbg
Thanks! Epic find  I’m a College of Architecture hopeful (Industrial Design) so seeing how few CoA applicants have deposited makes me think I have a chance.

Well it’s May! Any day now  Be sure to post when you’re notified.

Ga Tech has posted its deposit figures, and as of 6:45 a.m. today, 2164 admitted students have plunked down money to go to Tech this fall, compared to 2568 deposits received last year (and a similar number the year before), so it looks like they’ll be going pretty deep into the waitlist, even though there are probably some deposits out there that haven’t been tallied yet. Tech admissions hasn’t bothered responding to message board questions recently, so we still don’t know how many students accepted the waitlist offer.

Regardless, this is good news for those still hoping to get in.

@Malliford
Thank you SO much for the find!
Does anyone know when in May we usually find out?

The admissions page says between May 15-June 1, but I would hope it comes before then. At this point Tech is now competing with colleges that already have students’ money, so they need to step lively before plans get set in stone!

I was told that if they have summer slots for the waitlist, they will notify applicants the first two weeks of May. So I assume they’re serious about the 15th notification date for Fall.

As of this morning, Tech reports that 2339 students have put down their deposits for fall 2011 (up 175 from yesterday’s tally). If that number doesn’t change much over the next few days, then they’ll still need around 200 students to fill the fall class. Tech still hasn’t said how many applicants are on the waitlist, just that 1,200 received the offer.

People have been getting phone calls apparently! They have been offering people slots and giving them until Friday to respond.

I got in!!! College of Engineering!!!
Email came at 17:43 today!!! YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!

D got a phone call today at about 5.00 pm and was informed about the acceptance. She also received email today. But it is doubtful whether she is going there or not. She already enrolled for USC.

I wonder if they contacted everyone today or if it’ll happen over time?

I’m sure they just started making calls today (after school), and I’m guessing they’ll make two or three rounds of calls, because they have to give everyone a few days to decide, and some people are going to say No.

The email message says “If you decide to accept this offer, please reply to Val Mack no later than Friday, May 6.” It seems 3 more days are there to make a decision.

@asianmom – Are you instate (Georgia) or out of state?

Im so sad… i just called georgia tech… they said they already have sent out the acceptance for waitlisted ppl

I bet they’ll have to go through second round of calls after Friday to fill the class.
