Georgia Tech Honors Program

Hi everyone! I recently got accepted into the GT Class of 2020 and was invited to apply to the Honors Program. I will be majoring in Chemical Engineering. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about the honors program and was wondering if someone could answer some of my questions.

  1. What are the benefits of being in the HP besides smaller class size?
  2. I've heard that HP students are isolated from the rest of the freshmen since they live on West Campus. To what extent are they isolated? Is West Campus really as unsocial as people make it out to be?

Just in general, how prestigious is the HP at GT? I know in other schools, honor programs are usually very prestigious but I’ve heard that the one at GT is not fully developed.

Thank you for your help in advance!

I’m in the class of 2019 honors program. I’ll be brief because there are other posts about honors program that i answered.

  1. I personally don't see much benefit of the honors program besides the smaller class sizes, extra funding and occasional events.
  2. It depends on what you want. Personally i'm the type of person who doesn't party or drink, my friday night usually consists of enjoying myself with friends by watching movies, going to swing dances, or other campus events. We're not socially secluded, rather East campus just has more social activity. There aren't any parties on West campus, so I actually prefer it because it's quieter, but that's just me.

HP is really clandestine, people get a lot wrong about it, I would like to dispel some myths about it.

  1. Honors program classes are NOT honors classes.

Honors program classes are sections or special classes reserved specifically for honors program students. Anyone can take honors classes.

  1. Honors program classes are harder than regular classes.

Honors program classes are more or less the same as regular classes, except sometimes they make it easier for us by giving us more projects that boost our grade. The reason people say it’s harder is because they see their peers doing better in the class, when in reality it’s just the honors program.

I will agree that our honors program isn’t very well developed, but I do expect that it will go somewhere in the next couple of years. It’s definitely good to put it on your resume, but from my experience, a lot of employers really don’t care about if you’re an honors program person.

With the negatives out of the way, the positives are that you are living with people who are all at the top of their class, and who are definitely amazing connections to have. If you get it, definitely accept it, unless you want grand challenges.
