I have gotten into the ME programs at both UT and GT, but I'm still not sure which school is the best option. Georgia Tech has a better overall engineering program, but will cost about twice as much money. Any input would be great. Thanks.

If you live in Texas, want to work in Texas, and are indifferent between the two locations, I would go to Austin. There's not enough of a difference between the programs to justify the cost in my opinion.

The exception would be if you want to work in the Southeast. In that case, you might want to consider GT because of the better employer relationships in the area.

don't spend more $ to go to GT. Austin is awesome.

Both schools offer excellent engineering programs and UT-Austin also has an engineering honors program which is pretty awesome. I moved from San Antonio to Kennesaw, GA this summer and if I had not moved I would be going to UT, but Georgia Tech and the PS mean I’ll be staying in Georgia.

UT is more academically diverse than GT which allows more freedom to explore other interests and if you are looking for a more standard college environment UT definitely offers that, and I personally love Austin. Although you should wait until you get financial aid offers from both institutions before making your final choice, I would say that Georgia Tech is not worth spending more money for. The Engineering program at UT-Austin is outstanding and their ME program is in the top ten so the difference in academic quality is not significant.

As far as career prospects both institutions are known for their excellence in job placement for engineers and UT-Austin has one of the best career services office in the nation. Both institutions have co-op and internship programs, and starting salaries are very similar between the two institutions.

If UT ends up being cheaper I would choose UT, but ultimately you have to weigh what features you want in a college and decide which institution best fits your preferences. What are you looking for in a college? What aspects of GT would make you choose GT over UT even if it cost more?

UT Austin is a much "nicer" place to go to school. I am an alumni of both GT and UT-Austin (though not engineering.)

I love Austin. Atlanta is great, but Austin is fabulous.
