German.

Greetings.

What are your opinions of German as a foreign language? Did you like it? How difficult was learning the language? What are the similarities between German and English? What is the practical usefulness of German?

If you encountered a witch's curse that made you forget all of your tongues except English, would you choose to learn German again?

Thank you. :)

*This post has been inspired by German rock music that I heard at my friend's house while he was playing Call of Duty 3 on Xbox Live.

I absolutely love German. I've been trying to pick it up on my own. I just love the way it sounds. It is in fact a lot like English.
I found the BBC's online German course pretty useful: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/lj/

English is derived from German so I would imagine that it would be a bit easier. What song did you hear? The band Rammstein is some nice German rock.

German.... I don't take it, but my friends tell me it is very easy. It's the language of business in Europe, so some tell me.

Lots of engineers and business people can get well-paid jobs in Germany if they transfer from the United States. My friend's dad is a chemical engineer who is going to Germany and he's getting paid $24k per kid he has in college (4, I think), plus probably an additional six-digit salary. According to my German teacher (so it may be propaganda, lol), there's a lot of science-oriented job openings like this in Germany. Obviously, Germany is becoming a technology and business capital of the world, so I don't think the opportunities are disappearing any time soon.

I don't like German, but I wouldn't like any other language either. It's very easy, but every other language would be easy, as well. At my school, though, German is viewed as the hardest language to learn. I'm not sure whether this is because the teacher sucks or the kids are stupid or it's actually diffiicult. Generally, 30 students take first year German, and by senior year, there's 8 or so left--mainly from students flunking out, or attempting to maintain a good GPA.

English comes from German, so there are similarities in the grammar and words.

German (and I'm sure other languages are like this) seems very "mathematical" to me, where you just follow a sort of "formula" for the grammar, etc. Then again, one of my friends who is excellent at math had to drop out of German.

Rammstein sucks compared to the rest of German rock and music in general

my friend takes it and she apparently loves it so idk, go for it

I wish my school had German!

Have you guys heard of a German rock song called Doo Haast or something? My friend was listening to it and it sounded German to me. It was really weird though lol.

^It's Rammstein. Which is much more popular abroad than in Germany.

Oh.

Is Rammstein the band or the name of the song?

German sounds a lot like English.. especially German rock o.O;

Class probably depends upon the teacher but probably would be simple overall.

You mean Du Hast
Yeah, I'd learn German if for no other reason than to be able to understand Rammstein lyrics

my school used to offer german and latin, I guess they ran out of money or something... I didn't know there's german rock music, is it any good?

My friends who take German say that it's really hard. But we have a terrible, terrible teacher so....

There is a lot of very excellent German rock (that isn't Rammstein). What type are you looking for?

YES, study German! I always wanted to study German, but my parents thought that was "wierd" and forced me to study Spanish instead. :(

This summer, I am taking a course in German :)

I'm going to become a German rock-star. If only I had the tongue... :D

What would you sing about? The quadratic formula?

Oh yeeaah.

German rockers sing about some WEIRD STUFF. The quadratic formula is downright mundane compared to their subjects...
