I was just wondering if this is the way NU works, or do you get rejected from the university altogether. I know some schools like UT accept you into their school, but you might not get accepted into the specific college, like College of Natural Sciences.

You apply directly to the colleges within NU, so no, you are either admitted to the university altogether (with the college) or denied altogether. You cannot apply to more than one college unless applying for a dual degree (I do not know how that works).

The supplement asks three interest areas. Are those the majors that you will pursue or what do they do with it? Do they affect your admission chances in any way?

I’m applying to WCAS, btw.

“Interest areas,” as expressed in your application, are completely noncommittal and almost never have an impact on your chances of admission. They know that students often change their minds (sometimes many times) between applying for college as a high school senior and graduating from college 4+ years later.

Do you go into the school without a major and when are you supposed to declare it?

you can go to school with a undeclared major. For WCAS, I believe you need to have declared a major by end of sophomore year

Only a few majors need to be declared on your application, and at only a few schools.
For example, some schools require that prospective biomedical engineering majors apply for that major specifically going in (I think JHU does this). Otherwise, you declare when you’re there. For artsci students, that’s usually by the end of sophomore year.

If you have any interest in being a Theatre major you should apply as such. It’s MUCH easier to transfer out of the major than trying to transfer in.

You can transfer between schools once admitted though (WCAS->McCormick, McCormick->WCAS, WCAS->SESP, etc.)

Hey, Im applying for Fall 2011 and was confused about this too. I wanted to apply to the School of Communication, but am also looking to double major with a major from WCAS. So should I be applying to SoC or WCAS? and what if I get rejected from SoC? Is it possible to get accepted into WCAS and then transfer to SoC in the sophomore year when you typically need to declare a major?

^ Apply to the school with your primary major. It is easy to double major.

^ what constitutes as a “primary” major if you’re majoring in both…?

I may be wrong on this for other colleges, but Medill and McCormick don’t allow students in other schools to major in them.

From what I saw, most of my friends who were double majoring didn’t have their primary school as Weinberg [except, of course, those who were double majoring in Weinberg itself]

Prateek, I don’t plan on applying to Medill but to the School of Communication. So basically, you’re saying I should apply to the SoC cause doing a second major from WCAS is going to be easier than vice-versa.

Yep, apply to comm. And Comm is easy to switch in/out of, so dont get super stressed about it.

^^ Yup. And as suppasonic said, it’s easy to switch so don’t worry too much.

I’m pretty sure it’s required that your primary school has to be whichever one is smaller (in terms of # of people) - if you’re applying and are interested in double majoring between two schools, apply to the one that’s smaller. So yeah in your case it would be SoC.

Thank you so much guys :)
