I applied for International Studies at WCAS and got in, but was wondering if that actually means anything. I was pretty much undecided when I applied and now I'm pretty sure that I'll end up majoring in something else.

I know that I'll have to declare my major by the end of the sophomore year but I still am not sure if this major that I chose when applying will affect/restrict me in terms of my first year schedule.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. also, is it easier to get accepted into WCAS if you choose a less popular major than if you choose, say, economics?

It only means that you’re in Weinberg and that if you wanted to major in something in one of the other schools, you’d have to do an inter-school transfer first.

Conventional wisdom is that you can’t “game the system” by specifying a less-popular major on your application.

The only thing a declared major means is that you (usually, not always) get pre-registration into your major department’s courses.

In any case, you aren’t declared yet. You have to fill out a plan of study and get it approved by one of the department advisors, then turn it in somewhere. The WCAS office, maybe. It’s probably on the internet somewhere.

It may be tougher to get specific classes first quarter if you wanted to be in a completely different school, but it’s unlikely that you’d take anything too specific anyway. So unless you need to hit the ground running to get the right classes, you’ll be fine.
