Getting a 2200+ on the SAT

I've taken SAT classes (forced by parents) where I first started at a lowly 1500~1600. However, after the SAT classes I've found that my score is consistently at the 2000~2100 range. My first official SAT landed me at 2020, and I was wondering- is it possible to achieve a score of around 2200 by the October SAT? I've found it harder to break the 2100 barrier (if so, it was luck). It seems that the higher the score, the more difficult it is to get a better score.

It’s possible. You’d have to take quite a few practice tests and figure out how to beat your weaknesses though. For example, my weakness was the reading section, so the second time I took it I took some practice tests beforehand to figure out the best way for me to take the reading section. Not sure if that made any sense or if this helped at all…

My first practice test got a 1760 or something. PSAT 206, real SAT 2200. Lots of practice but doable.

Well the writing multiple choice is all formulaic. One you memorize the main questions and understand what grammar errors are usually going to show up, it gets easy. With reading, you just need to figure out your best personal way to approach the sections. For me, I went through the questions and underlined all of the lines that have questions about them so I could just focus on those while reading. Math is a bit tricky, since I believe that being good at math is more of a skill you’re born with. But still, there are some similar questions that are always on the Math section that you can go over.

What I’m saying is that you can always do more to prepare for the SAT. Of course you can get a 2200+.

My PSAT was 178. My only SAT practice was 1980 and my real SAT was 2070. I’m aiming for 2300+ in October.

My PSAT (junior): 198
March SAT: 2080 (720M, 630CR, 76MC/8E=730W)
June SAT: 2230 (800M, 700CR, 74MC/8E=710W)
October SAT: aiming for 2300+

I am in pretty much the same situation as you and am trying to decide if I should retake my 2230. This seems to be my score limit as I can not score higher on practice tests and I got a 33 on the ACT twice. Would it really be worth the time to try one more time this October/November?

Can someone give me a suggestion on what I should do to get 2100+ on SAT? I haven’t taken one yet but I took 2 PSAT’s so far
Freshman year PSAT: M-70, CR-47, W-46
Total: 163
Sophomore year PSAT: M-76, CR-57, W-63
Total: 196
I really need to improve on critical reading and just polish up my writing skills… for math the only reason I won’t get an 800 is if it is a stupid mistake.

LLama, what was your break down? As you can see, my breakdown was fairly skewed so improvement is still possible. If you are like 750ish in each section, and are finding it hard to improve at all, then I wouldn’t recommend a retake.

I got a 2070, took a weekend Princeton review class for 2 months, and pulled a 2340 my second try. Those things work magic :D

One of those links said Sparknotes had practice tests similar to the real thing. I would strongly disagree:

Chemistry: 660 Sparknotes, 800 Real
Physics: 770 Sparknotes, 800 Real (there were errors in the answer key for god sakes!)

@SheepGetKilled

Perhaps your Sparknotes test for Chemistry was simply a bad test day. And everyone makes mistakes in answers keys–even College Board! Of course, Sparknotes could be wrong too… it could be a lot of reasons.

Despite this being an old post, I’ll just say that I actually managed to get exactly a 2200 on the official SAT through sheer practice.

Congrats. I’m still waiting for my scores, and I was in your position where my scores were terrible in the beginning. My scores climbed on my practice tests to a 2100, and I think I did even better on the real thing. Hopefully I got a 2150+. Only 11 days until I find out. I’m really just worried for the critical reading section. If I get a 650+ on it then I should be fine.

^same here, lol! Taking the SAT for my first time in Jan, I got 1850, but I retook it earlier this month and now i feel very confident that I’m getting at least 2100. The weeks prior to the SAT, I did 20+ SAT practice test and on the ones closer to the testing day I was getting 2050+.

Yup only 11 more days! Good luck @giatns and congrats @OnColdIce

I consistently got low 2000s on my practice tests and I got a 2180… (not quite 2200 but basically the same)

^Congrats! Good luck on the SAT @giatns and @DMA017!

If anyone is having a lot of trouble with the SAT but feels they can do better, they should at least look into the ACT… I studied for an entire year for the SAT and simply could not do it… kept getting under 2000s, usually 1700-1900. Took the ACT for the first time with just under a week of studying and pulled a 33…I wish I could take it again but I’m a senior :x

You could actually take the ACT in December. Many seniors at my school are doing that. A 33 is a good score btw.
