I recently took the ACT and I didn't do great at all, only a 29. My strengths were writing and math (35 and 30) and my weaknesses were reading and science (27 and 25, yikes). I'm going to start focusing on the SAT but I'm afraid that even if I study all summer I will not be able to get a score that could compete with the top scores in the country. I got a 1950 on my PSAT (I'm a rising junior). Is there any hope that I may reach that competitive level at this point? I've taken a Kaplan class on the ACT and the SAT last summer and I managed to get a 2050 on the SAT once, but a lot has changed since then as I now have Algebra 2, pre-calc and a year of training for the writing section with my english teacher under my belt. Any success stories out there/tips for getting that score?

If you’ve gotten 2050 then a 150 pt. score increase is certainly within the realm of possibility. I would suggest buying the blue book and taking a practice test w/ no studying and seeing where you are at, then post here again and we can help you more.

Also, do you remember how your 2050 broke down? A 550R700M800W is going to be much more difficult to improve (due to the low reading score) then say a 700R670M680W.

I went from a 1980 in January (590 R 770 M 620 W) to a 2240 in March (680 R 760M 800 W) with only 3 intense weeks of studying, so it is definitely possible over the summer. All you have to do is practice, A LOT. Take whole practice tests (unless you’re really good in one of the subjects - like I didn’t practice for math at all) and then after taking them, go over every question you missed in depth, so you don’t make the same mistake again.

Definitely! I went from 2130 to 2330. Lots of people have 150+ point success stories even above 2000. You just have to put your heart in it and hit the books.

I took the SAT twice and got
January:
CR 630
Math 670
Writing 710 (10 essay)

June:
CR 660
Math 630
Writing 710 (10 essay)

I’m spending 7+ hrs everyday studying this summer for the October SAT and I hope to get a 2200. Do you think this is possible? The October test is my last chance (I’m a rising Senior).

Thank you for your time! Advice from people who improved from a ~2000–>~2200 is very much appreciated.

@NWskier, my 2050 breakdown was 660R700M690W. I should add that this was a year ago and I am planning to take a free practice test this weekend completely cold to see where I’m at right now. Hopefully its at a similar place! I know right now that my major weaknesses are the vocab and grid-in math questions, and I generally don’t do as well on critical reading then anything else. The problem with math is that all the easy and medium questions in the blue book come naturally to me, but the hard questions are always a major challenge. Its like I’d need sections with only hard problems.
