Now that I am almost done with the first semester of my junior year, I am fairly certain I will be getting a B in my AP Language and Compoaition class. Although this is a weighted class, this is not my first B (I got one last year in Geometry) and I might want to major/minor in something related to English (I have always been iterested in writing & politics, so maybe political opinion writing? Anyway, I am just so stressed and depressed about this grade. I know that grades do not define you to colleges and in reality, but it’s hard having one junior year aka the most important year. Does anyone have any advice or anything really?
There is no advice to getting a B except to get over it and try harder next time. It seems harsh, but it isn’t the first and will not be the last B of your academic career. Bs will not break your application and are definitely not worth stressing over, so relax and just keep working hard throughout high school.
About that B, might even be good for you.Now maybe you won’t be one of those insufferable college students who believes the world will stop spinning and anyone else will care a hoot, if they don’t get an A. This grade obsession (especially if paired with class ranking) is ruining education. Students are selecting classes on the basis of which are weighted more and which they know they’d Ace instead of which will be more valuable to them or which they need for what they intend to study later, or which is more interesting. Some students would rather sit through a class covering material they already know to earn an A than learn new material. Anxiety about grades is over the top and it is really harmful in so many ways. Some schools won’t accept a student who has had no failure experiences-not that a B is one of those. The point is that the grade is a function of how well you did in that one class at that point in time. Work hard and let the grade be as it is. That is how it is supposed to work… The goal should be to learn the material and the grade should reflect how well you did that. You may not see what I describe as being very different than striving for A’s. But it is.
Hmm that’s a really interesting perspective. I agree with your point, but I still think it will look disappointing to colleges as this will be my second B. Anyways thanks for the advice. Anyone have advice for AP Lang?
