I’m right about to finish my junior year with finals coming up. there is absolutely no way I am going to get an A in my AP Calculus AB class. I’ve gotten A’s through the rest of high school. I have been debating withdrawing from the class and redoing it online, but my college counselor tells me to keep this semester’s grade and then just take it online next semester, get an A, and hopefully get a 4 or 5 on the AP test. Is it ok to have one B on my transcript junior year? I know it’s the most important year for colleges, but it is also arguably the hardest. should I keep the B for the one semester, or withdraw (receiving a W on my transcript) and retake the whole course online, hoping to receive an A? Also, I am looking to go into business, so I figure this stem-related class is even less important in regards to college apps. thoughts?
Getting a single B is fine. Getting a few B’s is fine even for top schools. Withdrawing because a class was hard will not impress a college admissions officer.
Wasting time repeating a class where you’ve already received a B rather than learning something new is terrible advice. That would probably impress an AO even less. Who is this “college counselor” giving you this advice?
my counselor told me not to withdraw and just to take the second semester online. this way, I can finish this semester, take the final and then take the second semester online and hopefully get a 4 or 5 on the ap test. then, I wouldn’t have to withdraw and get a W on my transcript.
It’s absolutely fine with one B, my daughter had a B+ in AP Calc AB first semester of her junior year and got an A in the second semester and a 5 on AP exam and still got into Stanford last year. One B won’t affect at all. In fact she got waitlisted at MIT and Caltech too. So, don’t worry and do well on the coming ones.
