Getting a chance to be seen

My sophomore D is a volleyball and ice hockey player. Unfortunately, the teams she plays on are not good. We don't have the finances to even consider private schools. I wouldn't say she is a phenomenal player, but she's good. Does she even have a chance to play on the college level? I see all the hockey recruits are from private schools or Canada. It is very discouraging. She is trying out for a club team and hopefully that will give
her more exposure. How can we get someone to even see her?

My sophomore D is sort of in the same position. She is a volleyball player and her high school team has won a grand total of 10 matches over the last six or seven years. Last year they were 1-17. She is playing club and getting exposure there. Her team has gone and is going to tournaments that college coaches go to and she has been seen.

Playing club and going to the tournaments is a small part of it. You have to let the coaches know that she is playing and where she is playing. We record video of her and post it on YouTube. She emails coaches on a regular basis letting them when new videos are posted, how her team is doing, and where she is playing and when. If the coaches don’t know about her they will not see her so you and she have to get proactive and promote her. She is also on BeRecruited.com and NCSA and gotten several coaches to contact her as a result.

Plenty (almost all) of kids from our area get recruited out of public schools-but we are kind of hockey central here. I think what you need to do is to contact coaches at schools she may be interested in attending. Research the NCAA recruiting rules for hockey (they are slightly different for men’s, not sure about women’s then the rest of the sports) and just be aware that the coaches are restricted in when they can answer back. Just putting her on their radar helps. Email is better than a recruiting form but you can do those as well.

I also know that there are various camps, etc. that she can attend that coaches frequent to spot talent. If she can attend some of those, that will help as well.

Is she trying to play vb or hockey in college? I think they are very different in terms of exposure. VB is all about club - it doesn’t have to be a great team, but good enough to travel to be seen.
